VLC web plugin not working on Mountain Lion?

Postby matt84 » 23 Sep 2012 19:28

Hi,

I've recently switched to a Mac running OSX 10.8.2. I store my media on a Synology Diskstation DS212J which works perfectly on my PC but I'm struggling with web streaming on the mac. I've tried various versions of the full VLC version as well as the VLC web plugin but when I try to stream from the diskstation the player window opens and the timer ticks but I don't get any audio or video.

VLC does work fine when I download and use the player and the streaming from the diskstation works fine on my PC so I think it's either a browser issue (tried on both Chrome and Safari) or a VLC web plugin issue. I did read somewhere the web plugin wasn't supporting Mountain Lion yet but I'm not sure if this is correct (I would have though I would have read more about it). Could anyone confirm please? Or, if this is not the case, I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks
Matt

VLC's current browser plugins for Mac do only support OS X 10.5 and 32bit browsers. Any newer release of either software is either untested or known to be broken.

We expect to ship working web plugins again later this year. Sorry for any inconvenience in the meantime.

Hi Felix,

can you tell us what the current status of the web plugin for OX X is? Will there be a way to quickly find the working plugin, once it's out? Some homepage to check the status?

Thanks
Klaus

I'll update this thread as soon as we have something working. However, I need to follow up with the developer since I'm not aware of his current status.

We are going to publish the plugins on the usual download for Mac OS X page on videolan.org/vlc

It works great on Safari, Chrome and Opera at the moment, but there are some issues within Firefox left, so no release yet.

Felix,

Would it be possible to have access to the current working version, either as a beta or an initial release without Firefox support? We have been without a Mac solution for the VLC plugin for months. We would gladly take a plugin that didn't support Firefox over no solution at all.

I'll see internally if we can setup nightly builds, but no promises at this point.

thanks for the post Jean.
But I don't get any video or audio output via safari, chrome, or opera. At least under Firefox I get some sound before it crashes.
Also Chrome says: "Failed to play the video because its format is not supported by your browser or vlc plug-in."

I have a NAS (Synology Diskstation 212j) in my home network that streams e.g. avi-files to my macbook. I hope this information might help you, although I know you probably can not reproduce the issue without a DiskStation.

Hi,
I downloaded the plugin zip file and added into /Library/Internet Plugins/ folder. Now Safari has the plugin, but how do I make it to work with Chrome?
Thanks,

Chrome needs the 32bits version :) I can provide it, if people test it.

I downloaded your provided plugins, copy it into library/internet plugins, but it doesnt working.

In safari : It show : TypeError: 'undefined' is not an object(evaluating 'tgt.playlist.add'); //tgt can be this.vlc or vlc, depend on page.
In chrome: It simple show missing plugins, and i cant find VLC web plugins when navigate to chrome://plugins like i did on window.

Just tested it then on:

Code: Select all

Mac OS X 10.6.8
The Laptop was an old Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz and I had luck with getting it working with Firefox, I will need to move to a more reliable machine for further testing but it looks promising.

Thanks!

Hello,

Is -> http://people.videolan.org/~jb/tmp/maco ... plugin.zip still the latest code? In other words, this code has not made it into a release yet?

Thanks,
Jason.
