Unresponsive Preferences Button, No menu

I've installed VideoLan on a linux box running SUSE 9.3. I think I got through the install OK and the application does launch. I can also play mp3 audio files OK. However, the preferences button doesn't work at all and there are no menus either. I put in a DVD and nothing happens.

Is the preferences button suppose to work? Are there some keyboard shortcuts I can use instead as a controller? How can I fix it so that the button works?

When I run vlc from the terminal I get:

The latter command results in display of the skin (OS X) for the player but not all of the buttons work.

wx doesn't appear in vlc -l (--list). That means that you don't have the wx module installed (or compiled) for vlc

So how do I go about adding it in? I installed everything from rpm, although I do have the resources to compile. Do I just need to add the module or do I need to recompile vlc with wx for my system?

you most likely need to install the good rpm

As dionoea said, you probably don't need to recompile, but find the right rpm (probably wxvlc or something like that).

If your distribution does not provide, you'll have to recompile, and install the wx development rpm.
