How to save a streaming video?

Postby bibbolo » 11 Sep 2012 17:16

Hello all.
I need to convert/save a video (with protocol mmsh://) from a website. After loading it into my vlc player I cannot save that in a .wmv (or such other format) file.
I opened this path: media>convert/save..>network to put video mms url, then I pushed on "convert/save" button, chose the path in "Destination file" and pushed the "start" button but at this point vlc crashes... how to do?

You should record the video first (use the record button from View -> Advanced Controls), and then convert it.

Is the Record button recording your stream or not? Recordings are stored in "My Computer \ My Videos \" by default. You can check it in VLC playlist: View > Playlist. Then on the left side click on > My Computer, then on > My Videos. If you would like to change destination directory for your records, then set it in preferences:
Tools > Preferences > ( Show settings = All ) > Input/Codecs: Record directory or filename [_______]

Once you have successfully recorded something, you can convert it to a desired format.

Hi moderi and sorry for my answer delay.
Well, I showed up my record button, and entered the adress of my network video.. but what shall I do exactly? Push the play button first, wait untill the video is finished and then push the record button or shall I put them at the same time? How can I know when the whole stream is fully loaded?

O.K. Then try again:
Media > Convert/Save... > Network tab: to put video mms url > Convert/Save button > Destination file; [v] Dump raw input > Start button

O.K. Then try again:
Media > Convert/Save... > Network tab: to put video mms url > Convert/Save button > Destination file; [v] Dump raw input > Start button
This procedure seems to be different from previous instructions... and the record button? shall i push it or not?

Can't you just provide the address of the stream? Then I will tell you exactly what to do

You could use Record button while playing and watching the stream in VLC, but this way you will not have the complete 11:59 stream recorded, because it is not possible to press the Record button before start of playback and so you have to do it during the playaback.

You better follow this with "Dump raw input" option ticked there:
Media > Convert/Save... > Network tab: to put video mms url > Convert/Save button > Destination file; [v] Dump raw input > Start button
If you do that, you will not see any progress in VLC player, but the "Play/Pause" button is pressed. It is quite confusing, so better if you also have Status Bar activated: View > Status Bar. There you can see following information: "Streaming". You will have to wait all 12 minutes. If you check the destination file during the process, you will see increasing its size.

If you want to download and watch it at the same time, then you should use another method:
Media > Stream...
It is similar but there are more options.
> You just check [v] Display locally and [File] Add
> Choose [Video - WMV + WMA (ASF)] profile, but disable [ ] Activate Transcoding
> Then you can edit "General stream output string" and correct the filename extension .wmv instead of .asf if you wish so.

I hope, that all is clear now and you are able to save the stream by yourself.
