VLC 2.0 slow volume control

Postby Marcoevich » 08 May 2012 19:25

I don't know if it was done on purpose. It's not a really big issue, but still; in VLC 2.0 the volume controls respond a few seconds slower than in older VLC versions.

When you are watching a movie, and it goes from a silent conversation to a car chase in the blink of an eye, you want to turn the volume down. Also when you start to play a music file but your volume is way too high, you want to turn the volume down. But this doesn't work since the controls only respond after a few seconds..

This is a bit annoying. Was it done on purpose, or is it a bug?

Thx in advance ;)

Side effect of AOUT rewrite. It will be fixed at one point.

There is a patch floating around (see ticket 5654) so it might be fixed soon :)

This is marked as fixed according to http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/5654, but I'm still seeing this bug with VLC 2.0.2 on Windows 7 SP2.

I tried fiddling with the various cache settings in Tools -> Preferences -> All -> Input / Codecs -> Advanced, but changing them doesn't seem to do anything.

Is anyone else having this problem still?

@Guiser

Install the patch posted in the ticket. The lag is then less than 200ms:

The patch seems to fix the volume delay problem, but the bug report seems to imply that the fix is in 2.0.2, which it is not.

Also, after patching the dll, opening Tools -> Preferences and clicking on the "Audio" options panel crashes VLC. I tried to submit the crash, but even after allowing all in my firewall for vlc the ftp still fails.

Back to 1.x for me (again)...

Just tested this again in the 2.0.3 release and the volume is still laggy. The patch still seems to work, but also crashes the "Audio" options panel in preferences.

On a positive note, someone at least reopened the issue so hopefully we will get a proper fix soon...

No, I did not reopen the bug. I just corrected the milestone based on the current situation. That is to say, the fix is in VLC version 2.1.

Thanks for the clarification, I'm looking forward to 2.1 then!
