gamma/brightness flickers when playing to TV

Postby dramadeur » 22 May 2012 22:14

Okay, so there's a netbook with an HD video.
I connected netbook via hdmi cable to a big sony TV klv-46j400a0, 1920x1080 resoluition at 60hz, GT 540m videocard.
Desktop, web sites - they look just fine, nothing flickers.
Even other videos, various video clips (on youtube), tv shows.
But when I play this video via K-lite codecs, Media Player Classic, it would flick every ~10-15sec (brightness/contrast would go low and then quickly be restored)
while when playing this video via internal VLC codecs, videos flickers less, but it would flick every ~40sec (brightness/contrast would go extremely high for just 0.5 ms and then restore).
What makes VLC handle the video better than k-lite codecs' configuration? I already tried turning off dynamic contrast, live colour options in TV. But I guess I need to do something like that in codecs' settings as well, how?
Video info:

p.s. the video plays just fine with the notebook's screen, it's just when I connect it to a TV, the going frames would flick (if I pause the video - brightness/contrast wouldn't flick/change voluntarily).

Sounds like you may need something like Reclock.

Ok. Can you try OpenGL output?

By default it supports media player classic - didn't help at all, so I uninstalled "reclock".

Thanks, it seems to help. Although, how can I include frame positioning in full screen mode? It'd be preferred. Right now, to change position on a video timeline I have to escape full screen and use the "slider". I know there are hotkeys, but it's not that convenient to jump over big duration.

Also, in Media Player Classic I managed to make it handle video better by putting "Overlay Mixer" option for "DirectShowVideo" (by default was EVR custom pres), but it started to behave like VLC in default output mode, it would flicker every ~40 sec (increase in brigthness/gamma).

Could the issue with brightness/gramma be cause by YUV->RGB conversion?

I do not understand the frame positionning question. You mean the fullscreen controller?

Yup, the one with which you can jump onto a certain position on video's timeline.

Also, is it me, or does putting an output for "OpenGl" makes picture look less qualitative? It's like shades of lights look... like as if it's 16 bit colour, not smoothly gradiented.
