( SOLVED ) No sound after recording YouTube video.

Postby TigerRag » 12 May 2012 19:56

Hi,
Sorry if this question has been asked but I did look but could not find anything.
I have opened the Hobbit trailer from YouTube via menu option Media->Open Network Stream and in the Network tab where it says “please add network URL" I entered http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPkL7V1kExg and the video loads fine.
When I use the red record button to record the video while watching it, it records and in very good quality too but I have no sound on the recorded video. I am using VLC media player 2.0.1 Twoflower and Windows 7 and wondered where I am going wrong. I would be very grateful for any help or suggestions you experts can give.
Thanks very much in advance.

Hi,
Thanks very much for the quick response.
The suggestion to use the webm container worked just fine, thanks. :D
This also works when using the Media->Convert/Save option. Just need to remember to tick webm via the “edit selected profile” button when the convert window opens.
Thanks very much for your help.

I'm getting the same problem, but I don't understand the workaround suggested above. How exactly do I get it to use the webm container?

I also get loss of sound if I use SHIFT + R to record part of a webm file I'm playing, it converts it to avi, is there any way I can stop that happening?

BillBald Hi,
Just confirming your question, are you asking about recording YouTube videos or the Convert/Save option of YouTube videos?

Hi TigerRag.

I'm having the same problem as you did when recording from YouTube URL, and you seem to be saying that there's a workaround which solves the problem, but I don't understand exactly what you did.

I'm also having a problem when I previously downloaded a WEBM file using SaveVid, I try to shorten it using SHIFT + R and it converts it to AVI, losing the sound.

Hi BillBald,
What I did rather than trying to record the YouTube video I used the Media->Convert/Save option. Go to the Media menu choose Convert/Save, when the “open media” window opens choose the network tab and paste in the YouTube URL and click the “Convert/Save” button. where it says in the new window that opens “destination file“ browse to where you want the finished video saved using the browse button, in the “file name” box give it a name, remember to add .webm on the end of the name i.e. name.webm, Under settings choose from the dropdown menu webm and next press the “edit selected profile” button just next to the dropdown menu, highlight webm in the window that opens, you need to do this as it will not work otherwise and click on the start button. You should see the download progress at the bottom of the VLC window.
I hope this helps, please let me know if you don’t understand any of the above I’m not very good at explain things.

Hi TigerRag, yes it did work OK, although not every time.

But it didn't solve my main problem, which is that I often want just part of a video, so I need to be able to use the Record button (or SHIFT + R). Hopefully the problem will be sorted out.

Okay good it worked, I found its best to close down VLC before starting a new download, VLC seems to get confused otherwise.
Sorry I can’t help with the recording parts of videos, I have used VLC in the past to play music and videos I already have but not much else. It may be a good idea to ask the question in a new thread as this is showing as solved so maybe no one will rely to your question.
