That extra windows bug still needs fixing. As I said above:

You know how you can use the audio menu to select what track you want and only one plays at a time (and the same for subtitles)? Well I believe that there should only be one video track playing at a time (selectable from the video menu, just like you have a menu select for subs and audio), that will play in the main player window and no new windows will spawn, and this would be the default.
However there should be an option in the preferences dialog that would enable playing of all video streams simultaneously if one wanted that (and further options to let those be either in separate windows, or all playing in the same window arranged in a tiled pattern provided that the multiple streams have the same frame rate and image size). I would like to see such improvement to the software in one of the next released versions.

First Uninstall vlc media player
go to task manager under process tab , End all process of vlc.exe
now go to C:\Program Files and delete video lan folder
Now install vlc again..
that worked for me

i'm having the same problem
the issue is that some .mov files spawn an additional black window
in my case VLC (direct3d output) that covers the original movie stream

now if i were to see only one video file i could let this one pass, because all i really have to do is to find the real videostream and click on it and maximize
but if i am watching a series of videoclips and this happens all the time
then i regard this as a serious bug that needs to be fixed.

You can always hire a coder. The ticket related to this has been open for few years now, so I don't think anything will happen soon.

Dear all,

i just figured out a way to play only one screen (if the solution is not yet posted by anyone else)...
it seems that such files has 3 video tracks (similar to having 3 audio tracks in 3 different languages).
what needs to be done is the following:
- to go "Video"
- go to "Video Track
- click on disable
- go to "video again
- select one of Track 1 and click play

this should solve it and u can play the whole video in one screen.

NOTE: i think the other tracks in the video can't be removed since they are in the file when it was created.

Hey guys,

I was having the same issue with VLC 2.0.1 and searched for the solution here but couldn't find a straightforward answer but I eventually figured it out. Since there were recent questions regarding this and this was the first post that came up in google I figured I would help.

First off there seem to be two problems and most solutions are posted for the multiple track selection. This is not what was happening with me, and if I understand correctly most folks asking the question (hence more questions even tho the track selection answer was posted). The issue is what VLC uses to select the renderer. Now it might be a bug or might be by design while using the Direct3D renderer, I'm not sure, but easy way is to select the renderer you want to use (that is other than D3D), so...

for 2.0.1 (might vary with other versions)
Go to tools > preferences > video
in the display section, look at the output dropdown
change from Default (I assume this is automatic) to windows GDI (this works fine for me)
save and close out vlc, this should work now

hope this saves folks some time
feel free to research which renderer is best for you, I don't have this answer, I just use what works

Another setting to check is settings|advanced|video - Embedded video. If this is not checked, new windows are spawned according to the video output module selected.
