Delete VLC preferences.

Hello,

I have the same problem. I downloaded VLC 1.1.12, installed it and can't open the application. I've tried all 3 MAC Intel versions: 32/64 intel mac, 32bit intel mac, and 64 bit intel mac. Per the "README.MacOSX.rft" file, I have deleted the preferences, both by using the script "Delete Preferences.app" on the disk-image to do that and "by hand" [deleting "org.videolan.vlc.plist" and a folder called "VLC" in ~/Library/Preferences (your personal preferences-folder inside the library)].

I even tried to uninstall and install an earlier VLC version. No luck.

I've searched the forums and can't find an answer.
Please advise, I can't go without VLC!

Re: Problems with 10.7.2 too

Postby ilSommo89 » 05 Dec 2011 14:15

Hi, i have the same problem on Lion 10.7.2.
I deleted the preferences files using the tool provided in the dmg and tried re-installing. No results. When I select "open with VLC" on a file, it shows this

Image

I have no preferences files / folder in the system Library anymore.

Edit: solved uninstalling with AppCleaner and then reinstalling :) Yuhuu! :)

Remove the "org.videolan.vlc" folder in ~/Library/Preferences.

Which VLC version are you using? Did you download it from videolan.org?

Uhm, one last idea: does VLC work for you if you login using another account? If you only got, create one and try it!

There's probably some preferences file hidden somewhere, which prevents its proper execution. Since I already told you all the spots, I'm a bit clueless atm.

What you could try is launching VLC through the Terminal application (see /Applications/Utilities). Just drop the app into a terminal window, press return and see what happens. Make sure that the last part of the path is "VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC".

Postby AF1988 » 17 Jan 2012 20:46

did that and this is what came up:

root# /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC
VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry.
If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports
you can use /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and
cannot be run by non-trusted users first).
amg1815:~ root#

dont really know what this means. do i just need to find this org. plist file and delete it?

thanks

Ah, thought something like this. Yes, VLC does not support the execution on root accounts unless you compile it yourself and use VLC-wrapper. This is a security measure, which sense on virtually every setup.

VLC does potentially use the following user-specific files and folders:
- ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc
- ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.plist
- ~/Library/Preferences/VLC
- ~/Library/Caches/org.videolan.vlc
- ~/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc
- ~/.dvdcss

Not all of these folders are present in every release and some of them depend on the way you use VLC.

Felix,
Thanks for the reply.
Could you please translate that into Noob?
VLC was working absolutely fine for a long time on the original user account. Just stopped all of a sudden.

@marcus808: basically, just remove the mentioned files and it will be working again.

AF1988 stumbled across a different issue, which isn't related to yours.

Well, as said in my previous posting, you can't run VLC as root whatever you do...

Hey

I have got a new MBP and downloaded the VLC player. was working good for a week.

i turned on the web interface on vlc, and then onwards vlc does not work. what happens is that VLC launches and then nothing happens. any format it says 'could not open' i had gone through other threads and followed the advise. i found that

1. Playing from another user account VLC plays good.

2. I used 'delete preferences' app to delete "org.videolan.vlc.plist" and a folder called "VLC" in ~/Library/Preferences (your personal preferences-folder inside the library)].

3. I had used the terminal, put in the vlc app into and i got this message

VLC media player 1.1.12 The Luggage (revision 1.1.12-0-g63a4ce2)
Remote control interface initialized. Type `help' for help.
[0x100689958] main interface: creating httpd

4. I had downloaded from Videolan.org

I have no clue what to do next and find how to solve this issue. Need help.

I am having a similar problem. I had VLC installed on my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.6.8) and it just disappeared from my computer all of a sudden. It still shows up in my dock, but with a question mark and it won't open. As far as I can tell, the only thing I did recently was run the automatic software update. Could this have caused the problem? I tried re-downloading VLC from videolan.org, but when I try to install it I get this message: "vlc-1.1.12-intel64.dm not recognized". I have tried installing 64 bit and 32 bit and get the same message for both.

Can you please help?...
