Ubuntu 10.10. freezes on playing video in VLC 1.1.4

Postby anku94 » 03 Nov 2011 21:36

Hi

I installed VLC 1.1.4 on my HP dv6-6165tx laptop and it freezes while playing videos (the video output section of VLC goes black, display freezes, but the sound track of the video is audible from speakers).

My lappy has Radeon 6770M switchable graphics (with Intel HD graphics 3000- Sandy Bridge i7 2670M). Ubuntu prompted me to install fglrx drivers, which I did, after which my Ubuntu started booting into command line. I then deleted the xorg.conf file (backed it up) and used startx, after which it booted fine in GUI mode.

Here is the output of vlc -vvv I used to execute the player.

Any idea as to the problem? Thanks a lot!

What do you mean by display freezes? Does the whole desktop freeze, just the VLC UI or just the video rendering area?

The whole display freezes - as in it hangs.

That is not a bug in VLC then. If you can still switch to text mode (Ctrl+Alt+Fn) it is probably a bug in Xorg. Otherwise, in the kernel.

You can probably work around the bug by selecting a different video output plugin the VLC preferences though.

Ok.... I think this has something to do with the switchable graphics problem I've not yet solved. Thanks!

EDIT: I tried all the available plugins. Only GLX Video Output (XCB) gives a video output, and that too becomes choppy if I enlarge the window/play it in full screen. Any solution to that? Thanks again.

There's nothing VLC can do about bad video drivers. Try to reduce the screen resolution if it's too choppy.

Ok, I'll continue experimenting. Thanks a lot.
