Trying to play a .mkv file in VLC - Result: Green Screen

Postby Slafsmaskinen » 15 Oct 2011 11:12

Hi!
I've been experiencing some kind of unusual problem I think. I downloaded a file in .mkv format and it worked fine just a day ago. But then I updated my VLC to the latest verision, and now, that specific .mkv file only turns out to make a green screen. The audio is fine and so, but the screen is all green. I've checked my other .mkv files and they work fine so I don't understand why it is so. I don't think the file has been broken since it worked just fine before.

Any suggestions?

Does it help if you disable GPU decoding or change video output module?

I tried to choose both of the marked ones but it's still as green as in the background.

Edit: However, it seems like some things do appear, but only texts such as title and sub titles.

Are you playing Hi10p ? If so, use VLC 1.2 from Nightly Build of VLC

I'm getting the same problem. i've tried various combinations of output and no luck. a quick search mentions 10bit encoding but it was referencing linux. Older video works so this may be the case. As a test I installed div x codecs and tried with windows media player; I got video but no subtitles so I think it is something to do with the codecs.
edit 1.2 worked for me. thanks

Same problem. 4 days ago, this specific video file played well, now only green, no subtitles. Another file from the same source is just the same. I'm not sure what has been changed in the meantime. Other videos are fine.
Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)

Have you tried to reset VLC settings by removing %appdata%\vlc folder?

I have the same problem and would like to know how to "reset VLC settings by removing %appdata%\vlc folder". Installed DivX Plus player and it does play most of files that VLC shows only green screen, so, files seem to be OK. Tried with both XP PC and 7 PC, but same results.

Edit;
Did reset VLC but no change. However, tried 1.2.0 and it worked, only with Windows7, not XP, anyway it does work. Thank you for help.

... would like to know how to "reset VLC settings by removing %appdata%\vlc folder".
From Run start CMD prompt
Type Set (and hit <Enter>)

Scroll up and look for line like this:
APPDATA=D:\Documents and Settings\A & L\Application Data

(it will be different on your computer!)

Go to that folder
(since some of the sub-folders in that path are hidden the easiest way to go there is just copy/paste of the folder name
(in my case "D:\Documents and Settings\A & L\Application Data")
from the CMD window to "Address" line of any folder window (at the top)

To copy text: from CMD window -> click [c:\] icon at top-left -> Edit -> Mark
Select the text with mouse and hit <Enter>
)

Find there the vlc folder.
Move that vlc folder to another place (or just delete it).

Start VLC and it will look/act as if you just installed it for the first time.

hey guys
i normally use MPC to watch my stuff.
i recently downloaded a new show that seemed really choppy so i decided to re downloaded the codecs and it worked. i asked a friend of mine who knows a lot more about codecs and stuff and he told me some people have recently switch to a high bit rate encoding or something to that effect which is why the new codec plays the video better.

Using VLC the "higher bit rate" coding comes up as a green screen, and the standard videos show up normally.

i am guessing that this means the codec they are using is simply out of date for some of the newer MKVs being released. i wish i could explain better, but like i said im not a master at codecs and stuff and this is what i can remember hearing

Yes, the explanation is somewhat correct. Current VLC 1.1.x releases don't play 10 bit x264 videos correctly, you will only see green video. VLC 1.2.0 releases do play them correctly.

I ran into this problem.

I went to tools,
then Preferences,
Then clicked "RESET PREFERENCES" button.

Shut down,
Reopened and played the files just fine.

VLC has a dull colors by default, I then went to tools,
Video
Then selected OPEN GL.
Video is CRISP BRIGHT and everything displays perfect.
