I reset preferences within tools, but it did not give me the minimise, restore down and close options. I could not find a reset for cache.

Where is this folder? I've searched Windows and cannot find a file containing %appdata%/vlc.

Sorry to bump this, but I think it needs to be answered a tad better, and I haven't seen a new topic yet
For chrisin and past:
Open the start menu, theres a small box that allows you to search the computer, type %appdata% and press enter, you'll see a "Roaming" folder, (this is where all application data is stored in the windows 7 operating system, people who don't have win 7 usually don't realize this, and tell you to look for AppData, which can no longer be found by searching) within this wonderful folder, look for "vlc" (without the quotes) and delete that sucker.

That works just fine, but afterwards you'll have to reset ALL of the settings you may have set beforehand. I don't like that, if someone could explain WHY this problem (the lack of re-size, minimize and delete controls at the top of the window) is occurring, i would very much appreciate it. Or even better, tell us how to fix it without removing all of our settings.

Share your settings when that happens and we might know :)

Hello Jean Baptiste and Doctor_Fail

I am using Linux and I have no minimise, restore and close down options at the right of the top panel.
I re-installed VLC media player but the interface remains the same, without these options.

Operating System: Linux Mint 13 Maya with Mate DE
VLC Tools/Preferences/Interface Settings on their defaults which are:
Interface: System's default

and the following boxes are ticked:

Use Native Style
Show controls in full screen mode
Integrate video interface
Show systray icon
Resize interface to video size
Systray popup when minimized
Save recently played items.

That's all.

The minimise function is so useful when performing other tasks in between video watching.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Delete %appdata%/vlc folder

In a terminal I tried:

# locate %appdata%

and nothing was found.
There are many library files in usr/share/ but I have been unable to locate this data which needs to be deleted.

Cheers

OK, problem solved.
The problem was that I was looking for a function control (to view the Minimise, Restore and Close options) in the obvious places, in the Panel drop down menus either underTools or View, and as there is no option there to view the Minimise and Close options, I thought there was a configuration problem.
I had to right click on the top panel and select "Always on Top" which I had believed to be a Girls Aloud number.
It would be easier if the panel viewing options were under View in the toolbar.

Open VLC buy either clicking a video whatever , or open a movie . Once this is is done and the movie is running, right click in the screen area "Thats Right Click not left click " I spent 20 minutes on Tech support one day the guy kept on left clicking even after I said . " you have to be left clicking either that or your mouse buttons are swapped out
" he said wooops I was clicking the left mouse button. If I coulda reached through the phone......." that is"

Now go to Video / then put a check mark next to the option that reads "Always on top" presto your done ...

Yes that works, thank you, but when VLC is closed and then reopened, the setting isn't saved. How do you save it please.

I've found the answer which is, after all, in the preferences menu settings. Just go to tools, preferences, video and select always on top and save the setting. As long as you haven't also selected full screen, this will resolve the problem. Interestingly and frustratingly, if you then go to full screen and then escape out of it, the problem reoccurs for the rest of the session. This didn't happen in the past so must be a quirk or arrived with an update.

I had this problem one time too. And for me all I had to do wasto go the VIEW Menu, and make sure there is NO check mark in front of the word "FULLSCREEN INTERFACE". I did that and BAM there was my exit, minimize, and restore button's.
Hope this helps anyone out.

Thanks very much. Deselect 'Fullscreen Interface' under View menu (or F11) did the trick.
