Can't play videos

Postby iHateUserNames » 16 Apr 2011 01:00

I was recently forced to reinstall XP-Pro. Videos I downloaded off the Net that used to play, no longer play. The player I use doesn't seem to matter. Usually I just get a black screen, but this player I get flashing colors within the play window. The audio is ok on the 3 players I've tried including this one. You tube videos seem to be ok, it's just the ones that require a third party player that seem to have problems. Just d/led this player the other day so I should be up to date. I've tried a variety of different videos so it's not the media. I'm at a loss.

Any ideas??

Thank you in advance

Update your display adapter drivers. Or change video output module

I spent substantial time typing up a detailed reply as I walked through the above steps. I didn't submit it immediately, and when I finally did - all my notes were gone. So I had to rewrite this.

In any event, nothing worked. I'm still seeking a solution.

Thank you

So you installed latest display driver adapters? If so, were did you download those?

That was one of the details I typed up and never got to submit.

And you get black screen even if you disable Overlay and use WinGDI video output module?

There are no options to do that. Perhaps I've already done it is why? I don't know. Lost.

There are those options in VLC preferences.

I took a nice long break from this and am fresh.

Yes, I disabled Overlay.

No, WinGDI is not an option anywhere I can find. My choices for VIDEO OUTPUT MODULE are Direct3D, DirectX, SDL, Scene Filter, YUV Output.

That's it.

Thank you

Then your VLC install is broken.
VLC 1.1.9 from videolan.org allows WinGDI

Quite possibly yes. But, that's not a solution. That's a conclusion. I was hoping for a solution. I presume your solution would then be to "reinstall VLC".

As I indicated from day 1, VLC is not the only viewer that will not work. This implies there is something common to all viewers that is wrong with my system, which would then tend to point to Windows itself as being the problem. Since it's a fresh install I can only presume something I need failed to get loaded for some reason. The only question then becomes - what is it and how can I fix it?

Thank you

Probably a driver incompatibility. Video driver, audio driver are usually the ones to blame.

As far as I know, both video and audio drivers are from the same source, and in fact the same file:

266.58_desktop_winxp_32bit_english_whql

Oh well, who knows maybe I installed it wrong somehow.

Thanks for your help anyway.

This is video, not audio, I think.
