Issues in Mac OS X client

Postby tJM » 24 May 2005 16:51

I've had a couple issues, and I didn't see them mentioned in my brief scrolling through this forum.

I only have one VCD, made on a coworker's Windows machine. I downloaded the VLC beta yesterday to play the video on my Mac. Running Mac OS X v10.4.1 with all system updates installed.

Problem 1: While the video was not recorded as a wide-screen video, VLC displayed it "stretched out" wide-ways as thought it was trying to make it fit a wide-screen ratio. I looked through the preferences, even with the Advanced checkbox checked, and I couldn't find a way to properly reshape the output. Dragging the bottom-right corner just changed the window size, and the width of the actual video area shrunk corresponding to how I dragged the window, but the height of the actual video area scaled with the width of the video area so that didn't help. (This may just be user error... however, it seems like it should be a lot easier for the user to figure out what to do to remedy the problem. Perhaps a toggle button in the main controls window to switch between widescreen and full-screen modes in case VLC incorrectly guessed the format.)

Problem 2: Toward the end of the movie, there was a Credits section which should last about 1 minute. VLC stopped playing the movie right after the word Credits appeared.

I tried the video at home in a multi-format player for Windows XP (I think it's called Cerulean or something like that... has a round, green icon) and neither of the above issues appeared; the video ratio was correct and I was able to see all of the end credits.

If desired I might be able to e-mail the VCD files to the developers.

Regardless of the bugs, it's great to see a free VCD player for Mac!

VLC 0.8.1 crashes every time I launch time, after a few seconds. I tested VLC 0.8.2-test1, and it crashed after a few seconds too.

I'm running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.1, and this bug is very annoying. I hope it will be solved soon :)

Thanks again for your application, it works fine ... when it does :D

OSX/Tiger on dual-G5, sound output still doesn't initialize

Postby water » 25 May 2005 01:23

This has been an issue for the last few revisions, starting with a message "Unable to initialize" with any sound output device selected, but no crash and no sound. This bug is independent of the source type. I am unsure if the same problem has been reported before from the forums or bug-tracker.

Little bug in the transcoding assistant : the output folder of the file is always the input folder, regardless of the selected output folder.

hi,

i'll ad my comment too ! :D

With mac OS X 10.4.1 and VLC 8.0.1: for an .ogm file (with two tracks for japanese and english and one for subtitles), VLC won't give you the possibility to switch the tracks.

This Bug is partially repaired with the beta 8.0.2 but it's still unstable !

Keep working in this way, you're doing well

Thanks

Resume feature...

Postby mikedawwgXizor » 26 May 2005 07:13

I would love to be able to close the player in the middle of a movie or show, then open back up and have it resume where it left off. I'm sure this would be a very convenient option.... :P

I could do the same in winamp, but winamp is more best for music playing rather than video...

I would love a better interface to access controls to the video settings....ie brightness, contrast, etc. So i wouldn't have to come out a full screen, go into submenu folders, make adjustment and save. To time consuming as is.

The VLC 0.8.2-test1 dmg that is linked to above doesn't even mount properly on 10.4.1, is it just me or is the download broken?

VLC subtitles aren't clear enough!

Postby Bilgemonkey » 26 May 2005 14:51

I made the post above by the way. Subtitles in the version I have don't have a thick enough black border so in some parts of a film that are light the subtitles are unreadable. I was told 0.8.2 you can change the colour, how do I get a copy of .2 when the link provided gives a broken dmg?

@ Bilgemonkey

Could you download a current nightly build (same version as 0.8.2-test1, but with a bit more bugfixes) and try to mount it on 10.4.1. As far as we know, this should not make any problems.

Indeed, I forgot the last slash and the Xserve cannot handle that correctly.

Extended GUI

Postby Steven S. » 27 May 2005 01:45

Opening the extended GUI (either from the menu or ctrl+g) when playing back a video shows weird garbage on the video. See here for a screenshot of my problem (note that the screenshot didn't capture the video itself, as it shows up in black). If I minimize the player then maximize it, the garbage disappears. If I pause it still stays. If I close the extended GUI, it goes away. It happens whether I have the image adjust filter on or off and regardless of what video file I use. Don't think anyone else has mentioned this yet.

Can anyone else verify this?

Using Windows XP with zip build of 0.8.2-test1 and a completely new profile.

this is a known problem. We unfortunately have been unable to find a fix (it only happens on windows but not on linux while we use the same interface for both ...)

I've a problem with fullscreen mode on Mac and Tiger. If using the default video output module, in fullscreen mode I have a green 1 pixel frame around the entire video. Switching the output module to quartz, the frame disappears. This has been a problem with all the "nightly" builds, and the official 0.8.2 beta 1. I just checked 0.8.1, and with opengl, there is no green frame.

The reason I mentioned it was because I didn't see a bug filed for it. If it's a known problem, shouldn't we file a bug for it so that future people like me don't complain about it and the developers have it on their todo list to fix? (This is assuming that there isn't a bug already filed for it and I just couldn't find it. If that's the case, please correct me.)

Subtitle issue

Postby Golias » 29 May 2005 01:58

I've notices that DVD subtitles in VLC have a problem whenever there's more than one subtitle stream going on at once.

Basically, if there's a subtitle for a sign in the background, or text on the screen, or a second character talking at the same time, then every time one line of text appears or disappears, all the subtitles on the screen "blink" off for a moment. It's like all the subtitles on the screen refresh whenever something changes, and the player is not quite keeping up.

This comes up frequently in Japanese anime DVD's, especially comedy shows (like Azumanga Diaoh, SuperGALS!, or Excel Saga), because there are a lot of times where there's more than one character talking, or text pops up to translate a sign or something.

This problem existed in .8.1, but I was hoping this version would have it fixed. So far, it does not.

It's maybe a hostname issue, check the ServerName setting in /etc/httpd/httpd.conf or change marchine's hostname with /etc/hostconfig
