I am having the same problem. The subtitles look fine in DVDsubedit. I Deleted everything in appdata/vlc and that did not fix the problem. I am running VLC 1.1.4 on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

Did you try the Disable DVD subtitle transparency option?

I just tried that and it did not make a difference. It looks like it is drawing the outline layer but not the text layer.

Do you get any errors/warnings related to subtitles when you open the DVD? (open Tools -> Messages and set Verbosity to 2 before playback)

I do not have the DVD anymore, it was a rental. I have noticed this problem before, I will try that next time. Thanks vlc_help.

Does it help if you remove libyuvp_plugin.dll from plugins folder of VLC?

I meant does it affect color of those subtitles?

I am experiencing an identical problem, with an identical avcodec warning about using a non validated subtitle codec. The problem occurs in Win7 32bit and on Mac OS 10.5 (latest update).
