I can confirm that this is triggered by having TASK MANAGER opened at the same time as VLC is running. Closing Task Manager returns the mouse pointer hiding to its normal state. Try it yourselves, just close TM and the problem disappears.
This is a bug on VLC player and I really hope it can be fixed soon because the pre 1 versions did not have this issue. It is an annoying thing really.

Thanks for all the help.
I'm running VLC 1.1.4. Nvidia graphics and Win7-64bit. Same issue with the mouse pointer not hiding. Since I didn't have Task Manager open, that solution didn't help - but uTorrent was open - I closed it (minimized it to the Task Tray) and my mouse pointer was hidden again!
Seems to be a problem with applications, which have an visible icon in the task tray - can anyone confirm this?

Having process explorer active, in 1.1.1 disables the cursor hiding, when PE is closed, the cursor gets hidden. 1.1.4 has the same behaviour(hides cursor with PE closed, but not with it open).
1.1.0 hides the cursor even with PE active.

1.1.1 had these chamges(among others) that might have caused it, but then again I'm just guessing...
* Qt: fix preferences, hotkeys, messages and some fulscreen behaviour
* Skins: support for mousewheel in fullscreen, fix radialsliders
I have several other tray applications hidden, including thunderbird, skype & dropbox but only foobar visible but closing PE was the only that seemed to help.

It shouldn't be about systray icons since I have quite many of them (trillian, voddler, realtek etc.) and still VLC hides the cursors.

Nothing to do with system icons. It is with Task Manager and appears to only affect the AVI container. I have played some MKV files and these ones don't show the problem.

The sad thing is that the developers are not saying anything about the issue.

It is quite hard to say anything if we cannot replicate the issue.

@VLC_help: Just tell us what do you need? There are many with the same problem and we can surely help you gather more data about the issue. Do you need some logs? Tell us what to do and we will help.

Thanks.

Well according to earlier posts related to this issue, the VLC log (Tools -> Messages and set Verbosity to 2) says the hiding cursor thing when this should happen but cursor still stays. There are similar post on various programming boards that indicate other programs might have some mouse handling hooks that cause this, but without any confirmation (via Spy++ or similar tool) I don't know for sure.

Best option they give is to replace mouse cursor with 0x0 cursor or with transparent cursor.

Wow, glad I came across this thread since I was having the same problem.

For me, it looks like it's related to BitTorrent client (7.2). As soon as I hide the app to the tray (not just minimized), the problem went away. I'm also running process explorer but that didn't seem to have any effect.

Hopefully this might help the devs repro.

Thanks!

I have the same problem since updating to 1.1.5, even after uninstalling and going back to 1.1.4 the problem persists, i. e. the mouse cursor doesn't hide in fullscreen.

Now I have noticed that the cursor hides in normal modus instead! I think it's a VLC bug :(

I have the same problem after updating from 1.1.4 to VLC 1.1.5, but then the bug even persists after uninstalling and going back to 1.1.4, although I didn't have any problem before with that version.

I have noticed now that the cursor hides when not watching in fullscreen instead. What a bug :(

K I think I figured somethin out. If I have Utorrent running and and try to use fullscreen the cursor doesn't go away but as soon as I shut it down it hides as normal... but still quite a stupid bug

It would help if we would know what uTorrent is doing.

I found the same issue with 1.1.5 and uTorrent.

When I turn off uTorrent (completely) - mouse cursor hides.

At my case - just some uploading/downloading....

I mean what it is doing to mouse cursors or to mouse event handling.

I found the same issue with 1.1.5 and uTorrent.

At my case - just some uploading/downloading....

Mine seems to hide if I just close the utorrent window (but leave it running in the whatsit thingy jobbie bar in the bottom right)

Also, before today I've managed to get the cursor to hide just by messing about with the vlc window (doing things like pressing start while in fs, and then clicking back on the window... etc)

edit: Just to confirm it's not a coincidence - If I re-open the utorrent window the mouse cursor reverts back to not going away.

In summary.

Having the cursor problem?

Close the Utorrent UI. (you can leave utorrent running in the notification area)

Problem still there? - Open the Utorrent UI, then close it again (seems to trigger something)

I had this same problem. I am running Windows 7 x64. I am using VLC version 1.1.5. Sooooo what I did was change the millisecond multiplier to x3000ms, for some reason it was set at x1500ms. I think that was to short so it says in the highlight that 3000 is the default.
go to:
TOOLS>
PREFRENCES> (bottom right) click "show all"
Video (click on it)
now scroll down till you see "Hide cursor and fullscreen controller after x milliseconds.
change the box number to 3000 and VOILA!!
GL et Bon Chance!
hope this helps?

Could someone confirm that trick given by Raznarukus works?
