VLC 1.1.2 stops responding after pressing Alt or Shift key

Postby evgs » 30 Jul 2010 20:59

In some cases VLC 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 interface stops responding after pressing Alt or Shift key. VLC continues playing video, but can't be controlled via GUI until forced program termination.

Steps to reproduce bug:

0. VLC was installed with fresh config and clean cache.
1. Start VLC via videofile association.
2. Activate VLC window if not active.
2.1. (optional) Spacebar key pauses/continues video - VLC still under our control.
3. Press Alt key. we trying to activate menubar.
4. VLC still playing video but is not responding more.
4.1. (optional) Spacebar not work as pause key anymore.
5. Terminating VLC process via Task Manager :(

If I make next steps keys Alt and Shift works correctly:

1. Start VLC via videofile association.
2. Activate VLC window if not active.
2.1 Click on STOP button
2.2 Click on PLAY button

3. Press Alt key. we trying to activate menubar
4. In this time VLC still playing video, and is still responding: menubar is activated.

Affected VLC versions: 1.1.1 and 1.1.2
Not affected versions: up to 1.0.5 (1.0.6 was not tested)

OS: Windows XP SP3

Tested (and reproduced) only on single WinXP machine. Linux version works without this bug

I cannot replicate this. Pressing alt moves focus to menu bar so pressing space should show Media menu items.

Dear users, dear devs,

I can reproduce this behaviour now for a couple of weeks. It appears on my new-old computer to which I had to switch back since two months.
The background is the following: I was using VLC player on an ASUS notebook for a year, and I had to switch to an MSI notebook. On this MSI computer (an otherwise healthy laptop) the VLC never (for its last two versions) behaved differently, and I always fought this bug with a kill sequence in a process manager.

The current version of the VLC player at me is 1.1.5 and it behaves as evgs user describes above. Unless pressing stop and play, the ALT, SHIFT and CTL keys shows no response and the VLC players stops responding.

The VLC players on other computers, that I manage at my friends or within family, do not show this strange behaviour, and the bug cannot be reproduced there.

Thank evgs! Now I know a workaround :) It is still annoying, but at least I do not have to kill the player and start the movie again. That was very unromantic and distorted a perfect evening... ;-)
