Feature Request: full 3GP (mp4a / Qclq) audio support

Postby Spork » 30 Jul 2010 01:41

I have some videos taken with an LG eNV cell phone, each with the extension .3g2.

Naturally, they play fine on the phone itself. However, when I play these files in VLC Media Player v1.2 on a Vista PC, I get no audio playback at all. There's no error message, but there's no audio. GSPot reports the audio codec as: " mp4a: ? ? ?" - whatever that means.

If I open each .3g2 file in Quicktime Player Pro v7, I can save as a .mov file. If I open this in VLC, I still get no audio, but now I get the following error message:
"VLC does not support the audio or video format "Qclq". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this." Now, however, GSpot reports the audio codec as: "Qclq: Qualcomm QCELP"

The reason I'm so anxious to find a way to play these files properly is that they feature a beloved pet who passed away recently. I'd very much like to store these videos in a format that I can actually play with the audio that was originally recorded. I'd be happy to convert them to another format if there's a way to do that, but none of the conversion tools I've tried produce anything more useful than the equivalent of white noise.

I still hold out hope that VLC will eventually support this ridiculous format. I remember looking this up ages ago, and reading that full support for 3GP formats was planned for v1.0, but it looks like that plan fell by the wayside. I'm sure more cutting edge stuff takes priority, but I thought I'd make a heartfelt request for you to support the format in a future release. The sooner the better, from my perspective, of course. ;)

I'd be happy to pass along a few samples to the appropriate party in private, if that's of any help.

In any event, thank you for your continued work on the VLC Media Player. I hope you'll take a moment to let me know your current plans in this regard, and how likely it is that your future plans might grow to accommodate this request. :)
