VLC Crashing (Won't even open) HELP!

Postby bcherry » 06 Jan 2010 21:21

The other day I watched a movie using VLC and it worked fine. I fell asleep while watching it and the next day I tried to use it again. It popped up with a message, right after clicking the icon to open it, saying "VLC media player just crashed. Do you want to send a bug report to the developers team?" So I clicked yes. I restarted my computer to see if that would help and no luck. So I uninstalled it and re-downloaded it. Same problem. I've also tried different videos and nothing works. Just clicking on the icon to open it crashes it.

Also, I'm using the latest version of VLC and I'm running Windows 7 OS. Hope that helps.

Hello, I have the same problem, I deleted the direcoty and now it works fine. After couple of days i had to delete that folder again. Why is this happening? How can I start something like a debug mode, and activate a log file? I tried from settings but it doesn't works.
Keep in touch. If you want I can archive that folder and send it to you for analysis, I backed it up.

Well I haven't been using vlc for about 6 months now, I've tried pretty much everything. Deleting appdata doesn't work. Uninstalling it / reinstalling it. Manually deleting everything. The only thing I can think of is a corrupt dll, think that might be it? And if so how do I repair something like that? I talked to my brother and he said he had the same problem with vlc and had to get a friend to give him a certain dll from his computer. If he got it any other way it still wouldn't work.

What exactly is this "appdata" folder? I keep seeing in different posts how problems can be solved by deleting it. If so, why is it there in the first place?

What exactly is this "appdata" folder?
It is folder where VLC settings are stored. Some files in there can become corrupted if VLC crashes. You can find the location by:
Start -> run and type %appdata%\vlc there and press OK.
