Ladies and Gentlemen,
I do not know if you aware of this or if this was reported before (I did a quick search and I did not find anything) but if you change the Video Zoom Preference it seems VLC 1.1.0 RC and RC4 do not take those changes, ie it does not seem to work.
This is the Windows version.
