Another GPL question

Postby crj18 » 15 Mar 2005 00:36

I've read previous posts on this topic but I'm still unclear:

We're making an application that allows people to record video and then bookmark certain events in the video and write them to a database. We then provide tools for cataloguing and searching the events, exporting information to spreadsheets etc.

It would be very convenient to use VLC for recording and displaying the video...we would not link to the libraries, instead we would just run the VLC executable and communicate with it through the web interface. Would this violate the GPL agreement? Obviously we would provide a copy of the lisence agreement and VLC source code etc., but the rest of our application would be closed-source.

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Regards,
Charles

That would be completely legal.

Is there a list about all companies that use VLC for commercial systems?

Thank you :D

No there is not.

There aren't that many companies either that SHIP this. Most companies still use it in dedicated systems for special purposes.
Don't use PMs for support questions.
