choosing an IP camera (network camera) for VLC

Postby Guest » 11 Mar 2005 03:40

Im about to buy 4 network cameras for security in a few class rooms, and intend on using VLC to stream and save, and later down the track video conferencing for teachers across campuses. I've had great results with USB cams but no experiance with IP cams.
After reading a few mixed reports like viewtopic.php?t=4804&highlight=ip+camera
Im a little hesatint of buying any IP cam, does anybody recomend a particular camera with "true vanilla MJPEG" something thats going to work great.

*Me again*

Or should they all just work??
Anyone have a network camera that works without a problem on VLC?
should I just take a gamble and buy any? they should operate the same way i suppose.

The Axis cameras may be a good bet -- do a search on this forum for Axis.

Stay away from the D-Link products, at least the DCS2100 -- they use a proprietary container that won't work with VLC.

Ive been looking at the DCS2100, you can get there own software but i have been assured it IS possible to stream with them, its not easy but someone in russia has done it, just need to get around the camera security.... I like the D-Link cameras as there software, they just secured the camera itself, it IS possible as they stream to the browser with there own plugin which i am told is fairly standard, just need to find out what it is.

Many Thanks
Ashley
