Vote on S60.com for VLC media player on (Nokia) Symbian S60

Everyone, vote for this wish on S60.com to fully port the VLC Media Player to the (Nokia) Symbian S60 platform for mobile devices, if you want universal A/V playback on your mobile devices. VLC is open source and it leaves (almost) no audio or video codec behind. Hopefully Nokia will port VLC if they see enough votes, like they ported Apache (Mobile Web Server), PuTTy, Python, P.I.P.S. (Is POSIX on Symbian) and Qt (Toolkit) for Symbian S60.

I think (Not sure) developers at 'Nokia Reaserch Center' carry out the actual ports, however Nokia's S60.com is designed to get user feedback regarding apps and feature requests. Way I see it, if a VLC port is done properly, Nokia would save on codec licensing costs considerbly. Must be some other legal reason behind Nokia not doing it.

I would assume they're probably licensing codecs, for all the audio (AAC, AAC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, eAAC+, M4A, MIDI Tones (poly 64), Mobile XMF, MP3, MP4, RealAudio 7,8,10, SP-MIDI, True tones, WAV) and some of the video (3GPP formats (H.263), Flash Video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, RealVideo 7,8,9/10) formats they currently support for playback and video recording. If VLC is (eventually) intergerated, don't think they'll need to do that.

They have to pay the licensing costs if they distribute VLC with their phones. I doesn't matter who implements the original codecs or how, if you use them commercially, you pay (naturally there are countries which don't IP/patent laws to proctect stuff like this).

I'll soon have a N95 and indeed I would prefer Open Source VLC to any other commercial software (CorePlayer , etc.. )

Yes, absolutely! I mistakenly bought a Samsung Epix Windows Mobile-based phone recently, and between the sluggishness and other problems I have with that phone, plus the "Not Responding" behavior of my desktop PC, I really want to "un-Microsoft" my computing life as much as possible. I'm seriously considering trading in (when I can at a decent cost) my Epix for the new Nokia E71x, which I've read great things about. I would love a good media player such as VLC on it!

So, far we were able to play low bit rate mp3 files on Pankaj Yadav's (Lead Developer, MHSVLC) N95.
The project may be resumed soon.
We are facing some serious memory and CPU resource issues on symbian phones.

Another vote here. A 640x360 screen like N97 should be a sweet spot for VLC.

Alot of people would use it, cause there isn't really a nice media player for Symbian.
Realplayer doesn't support anything and Coreplayer has a really bad interface.

In the case you plan to release videolan on Symbian phones, I advice you to use Qt, it'll permit you to develop Videolan for both Symbian, Maemo/Meego and in this case you may use it for Windows/Mac/Linux too

Hi,

I am starting a project but only to allow S60 to play flash videos directly without browser or the built in stand alone player. Then I will use this library to create javame library and both C and C++ APIs for doing flash video decoding. It will be for S60. But it is going to take some time I think since I am newbie to codecs etc; I have a lot of base information to study up on. Any help would be appreciated to push me forward in this endeavor; URLs, Books etc... It should be a fun endeavor too!

Nokia N8 has the great features. VLC is a great media player. Would be very great if there's VLC player for N8
