How will VLC development be impacted (or take advantage of) Core Video once it's released in Tiger? Will that have any impact?

It is possible that it will take advantage of CoreVideo, but nothing is planed atm since no-one touched Tiger yet. VLC is mostly developed by students and they cannot afford to pay for a ADC-Select-Membership, so they can test Tiger before the release.

We will continue supporting 10.3 and most likely 10.2 as well with our latest releases while moving forward to 10.4. VLC will check the system version and then use the new Tiger-features when they are available and if they aren't they will be simply not used like the Open-GL-Output in current versions of VLC (it is available on Quartz Extreme machines only, other machines still use a regular QuickTime-output).

Hell we can't even afford ADC Student memberships :D

The good news is the existing systems API is not supposed to change for macos X after tiger (though they say they will likely add accessible kernel functions, they promised not to change existing ones)

This means compatibility for the future.

I'm also interested in participating and getting in some real world experience, but I need to teach myself cocoa & xcode first (I've only some experience in c & java, since my cs education has focused more in theory and algorithmic optimization so far)

Localization

Postby shuric_inc » 29 Jul 2005 11:32

Hello.
I would like to help with localization (russian).
Current version for Mac OS X is partially localized, how I can see.

How can I obtain a "list of strings" to be localized ?
And where to put it back.

Hi.

You can download the current localisation file for Russian here: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/file/trun ... format=raw.

Please contact me through a private message, when you are ready with your translation and I'll give you a mail-address to send the file to then.

BTW. The file mentioned above can be edited with so-called po-file-editors (which don't exist for OSX), but also with plain text editors. I strongly recommend you to use SubEthaEdit for that purpose.
Please make sure that you edit the file with the UTF-8-file-encoding (check Format -> File Encodings).

Thanks for your interest in VLC.

Hello

I'm interesting to help develop mac version.
I have big experience in C++ (gcc and MSVC, slt + boost) and Qt and a litle in obj-c. But I never work in non nature language projects later and have lower intermediate level in English (good reading and truble in writing language).

I think new developer may take some simple tikets for understand structure of project. And older member give recommendation for this. In new years holiday in Russia I try to begin work.

Thanks

Hello Plasmacutter and J-B

Actually I do not mind PM's, but there are many other ways to contact me to...

How ever there are a few things I would need to know to be able to help you out.
First and most vital: what has to be done?
second: who is in charge/aproving patches?
third: is there some documentation/ppp about how stuff is orginized?

So hit me on pm, since I think this information shouldn't lie around the forum.

The best place to go for all this is the developers mailing list. Announce yourself there and ask how you can help out.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

To repeat what I said in another thread ( viewtopic.php?f=12&t=59905 ):

If you are interested in developing for VLC, then contributing code is the best thing to do. You can either contribute to the general VLC code base, or to Lunettes (the new UI for MacOS X). Looking through the VLC bug tracker, selecting some simple bugs, fixing them and then contributing the patches to the developer mailing list is the way to go. Code changes speak louder than your experience, since you are providing something people can use, and look at in the context of the project. You need to be willing to take the initiative and to be able to accept criticism of your patches.
