Remember play-position on different files

Postby toadle » 17 Oct 2008 18:32

Hey everybody,

it'd be cool, if VLC would remember the position that it last stopped playing files. For example - I often start watching a video/movie and stop right in the middle. Close the program an come back later. All the time I have to search back to the position that I initially left of.

Would be cool, if VLC could do that on it's own. OR if there is already something out there, what could do this for me.

Thx!

Well those are gone, when you close the program, right?

Also, when I try to use them with my current .mkv file, VLC keeps crashing on me.

Sorry, I remembered that bookmarks where already saved, but it seems that hasn't been implemented yet.

YES! This would be great. I rairly have the time to finish a movie in one sitting, I'm constantly having to try and figure out where I left off.

Either retain the bookmark information for each video file, or simply rember the last position and re-start at that point, like powerDVD and others do.

Thanks!

What would be cool is that not only does VLC remember where it was in a file, but also in a playlist. So if I open a playlist VLC would open the file and position I was at when last open :-)
Thanks.....

I would also like vlc to remember the last played position of a file and I'm especially interessted in MP3 files as I'm subscribed to a few audio podcasts:
So why don't store this information in a official way, i.e. ID3-Tag?
I just filpped through the id3v2 "standard" and there seems to be no such thing as "last played position/frame". Why not?
It's high time to introduce such a thing, isn't it?

Metadata isn't meant to be modified on every playback. And you cannot write metadata to all files because the used format doesn't support metadata or you don't have write access to file.

I also miss this feature very much.

E.g. in Crystal I just close the player without making anything, an the next time I start a movie it continues from the same position.

Saving and remembering bookmarks of all files and DVDs listed within the playlist is definitely a very important option for those, who work as video operators for events, shows and conferences. The setup is as follows: open playlist, open bookmarks, set the external monitor (Screen 2) as full screen playout monitor and send it to the videoprojector. Start the videos using the bookmarks. On the notebook´s display you can monitor the timecode( a seperate, bigger Time display would be fine). That setup gives you full control over all cues from different files.

Just a quick question (2) & a fact...

When will the saving BOOKMARK function work? Unbelievable that it's not. Only wish I saw THIS page of people & thoughts before I went through my own personal "?/%^$_ etc., and found out all the little functions that weren't working as advertised beforehand. The education I now possess I truly don't need.

So, the 2 monster questions that deserve answers, more so than others (I think) are these.

1. Would it be all that difficult to put a FAQ of things that are normally expected by default, informing they ARE NOT working be to much to ask?
The time spent trying to make things work, the research & the reading. Of all people, you should realize that your time is worth something.

2. Will the BOOKMARK function, the saving of & usage of ever be fully functional? In it's current state I can see some of it's potential. But once that player is closed, the bookmarks (in a true usable state) cease to exist.

VLC is truly a fantastic piece of work. For such a common-place (simple) function to be broken is even more amazing.

To the VLC binary? Or to web page?

Well they have better change in future, because VLC 1.1.0 includes database engine which helps in implementing proper bookmarks.

See that. You said it yourself. Lots to look forward to, but in my non programming state am at the mercy of the VLC architects.

As for the first part, web page or binary. Your kidding :D , yes? Anyplace (before would have been good). Would have saved me hours
of searching, debugging, both the app and myself.

But on the real side without making work for those that wrack their brains coding. A simple informal text file giving devoted users a
heads up to parts that normally work are for the moment-disabled or not fully functional

What I'm saying is right but don't like saying things as I've never encountered such a powerful small app. I mean I haven't even scratched
the surface of what this thing does or can do. But, it eliminated ANY & EVERY player I'd ever used within the first 3 minutes of trying it
some time ago.

+1 for this feature.
It would be really nice to see VLC remember the seek points of the files in the playlists.

When is VLC 1.1.0 expected?

I had a few questions

1. Has anyone already fixed the bookmarks in the upcoming version yet?
2. If not, where do I sign up for the job?

1. Have you tested nightly builds?
2. Post patch to vlc-devel mailing list

I'm still getting my environment set up so I can build. ... I think there is an error in the wiki maybe. I spent hours trying to set this up, still not building. I think I might give up.

Remembering last media (video or audio) and the position where it was playing when closing VLC would be a great feature that other players already have.

I cant believe vlc still doesnt have this feature. Thats the reason i prefer thekmplayer instead of vlc. It is a shame that the kmplayer updates were gone. But theres no reason to use vlc while a lot of important features, that have almost all video players, are missing.
