This problem describes exactly what I am having too. Realtek too. Waveout in use, since I don't get any speech in DD with directsound. I am using the latest 0.9.9.

When trying to play digital audio over spdif (optical) I get terrible stuttering. When playing non-digital (stero sound) over the spdif it works fine. I am using windows vista business 32-bit. I started out with a Dynex 5.1 soundcard (envy chipset) and thought the stutter may be related to it so I updated its drivers...still stutter. I then "aquired" a sound blaster audigy 2 platnium....still stutters......updated the drivers......still stutters. I tried the win32 waveout option (remembered to shutdown vlc and restart after saving).....still stutters....tried the newest nightie again with the win32 waveout ....still stutters.....tried AC3 filter still stutters. I have recently purchased a chicken to sacrifice in a vodoo ritual to the DTS gods but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. I am trying to have vlc pass the digital signal to my external decoder (a/v reciever). Any help would be much appreciated and thank eveyone who has worked so hard on vlc it is truely an awesome player.

DirectX SPDIF should work better in 1.1.0 release.

Hey,

I've got the same issue with playing dd/dts over S/PDIF.
I've also tried to set the audio-output to "Win32 waveOut extension output" and I tried to set the Audio Device for the "waveOut" Option to my S/PDIF device. Without these settings the sound stutters like hell. With these settings the sound is playing well but interrupts every 2 or 3 seconds (The AV-Receiver loses signal for about one millisecond or so).

With Windows Media Player 12 and AC3Filter the whole thing works without any interrupts (5.1 dd/dts and 2ch sound). But I don't like WMP.

System config:
* Windows 7 Professional
* M-Audio Audiophile 2496 with newest drivers from M-Audio
* No Video issues
* No issues with 2 channel sound over S/PDIF
* VLC versions tried from 0.8.2 to 1.0.4 (nightly build)

Any ideas?

hey thanks,

the vlc-1.1.0-git-20091226-0002-win32 is working for me with S/PDIF. But there is another issue now.
The fullscreen mode isn't working anymore. Everytime I try to get in fullscreen mode it looks like this:

It will be fixed eventually =) But in meantime you can try different video output modules and see if one of those works any better.

I tried vlc-1.1.0-git-20091226-0002-win32 and mine still stutters, I would be happy with the full screen problem. I will try the next couple of nightlies and then will post back the results tonite. Thanks for the help.

Seymour_Bootay: you changed audio output module to DirectX one with 1.1.0?

What does Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) say when you start the playback? (open messages before video)
