Problem installing vlc with Redhat 9

Postby Cedric Barthou » 15 Feb 2004 14:18

Hello eberybody,
I have problems installing vlc.
I have forgotten to look for the install instructions and put a mess installing rpms from different sources.
I decompressed the tarballls and one by one, being newbie, tryed to installl the rpms decompressed from vlc_binary.tar.gz and for severall rpms there were failing dependencies that I tryed to resolve, looking for the missing files on the internet and installiing it.
All this lead me to a dead end (conflicts between packages) , and finallly I came back to the vlc home page, where I saw the install process.
I launched rpm -U vlc/* --force and now I get the following message:
warning: vlc/a52dec-0.7.4-4.fr.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e42d547b
warning: vlc/fribidi-0.10.4-4.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 4f2a6fd2error:
Failed dependencies:
mozilla = 35:1.2.1 is needed by (installed) galeon-1.2.7-3
and that interupts the install process.
Do you have an idea about what I could do to succeed installing vlc?
Thank you,
Cédric

http://shrike.freshrpms.net

This site has a number of rpms available specifically for RH9 (Shrike Build).

This also includes an rpm for VLC. Try it, it could turn out to be very handy.

Hi,
I have tried it but unfortunately I get the same problem.
Installing rthe vlc rpm, the following message shows up:
error: Failed dependencies:
mozilla >= 1.4.1 is needed by vlc-0.7.0-1
The problem is that among the dependencies needed by mozilla, that I tried to install, there is one that conflicts with a package needed by Galeon, my web browser.
Do I have to choose between my browser or vlc :? ?
Thanks for your help,
Cédric

Redhat dependencies

Get RID of those dependency error messages!!!!

Try using: --nodeps

Download the RPM packages tarballs listed in the section below and uncompress them in the same directory :

$ tar zxf <package name>

Then, as root, install the packages:

# rpm -U vlc/* --force --nodeps

Usually a --nodeps does the job as dependencies are simply ignored.
Please note however that using --nodeps and --force when installing rpms
every other day may result in a unusable system.

Hi,

I'm a student currently facing a problem trying to install the latest version of vlc 0.8.1 on redhat9. Another requirement is to have it support ipv6 address.

Read from several sites stating a requirement to build from source.

Will vlc 0.8.1 be able to support ipv6 using the above method ?

Will appreciate advise on a/m ....
