DVD won't play in VLC (but plays in other players)

Postby Binalternator » 15 Apr 2009 23:18

I originally posted this in another thread, but it might not necessarily be related to the exact same problem:

A week ago, I bought the newly released box set of season 4 of Lost on DVD. It's a German region 2 release.

The discs play properly on a normal DVD player. On the laptop, they play in other players (Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Media Player Classic), but when I want to play them in VLC, all I get is a gray window.

Since I was still using VLC version 0.8.3 when the problem occurred, I upgraded to 0.9.9, but the problem still persists.

The season 1, 2 and 3 DVDs from the same manufacturer play just fine in VLC.

Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) and then start playback and paste the messages here.

I assume it is added copy protection stuff that prevents VLC from doing the playback.

Why does it work in other players, then? Software-specific copy protection?

Decoder libs used in VLC don't handle added copy protection stuff very well. Other players don't use the same libs as VLC.

DVD won't play in VLC (but plays in other players)

Postby galliano » 11 May 2009 15:17

I have the same problem: I just tried VLC 0.9.9 for the 1st time, but my DVDs from the optical drive do not play. I made the following observations:

- The same video plays from the hdd once encrypted
- The original DVD plays if I go on-line (why is vlc working if connected with the internet?)

A very strange behaviour. With the Media Player Classic and with the WMP all dvd's start and videos play without problems.

Here some lines from the error log:

dvdread error: DVDRead cannot open source: F:\VIDEO_TS\V
main error: no access module matched "dvd"
main error: open of `dvd://F:\VIDEO_TS\V' failed: could not create access: no access module matched "dvd"

Some system Data: WIN XP Pro SP3, SATA DVD Drive

Same to me, but vlc doesn't play anything... anything at all... everything is gray and that's it. i tried to change the video output, but the only one that works is open gl and that is not the way i want to wach a movie... everything is on a very low graphic. The strangest thing is that one week ago i watched many movies normaly but now the same ones are just gray. please help

the same happens with 1.0.1 version, no one video-ts folder or DVD media work.
error message only show that can't play the file.
happens with my authoreds dvds and standards but play in NeroShowTime and MPClassic and of course in standalone players.

trying to play DTS files (.dts audio only), no sound. the statistics show only input bits and size and the pc turn to slow and heavy.
