HELP! Cannot play audio on .TS or .mp3 files

I've installed VLC media player on two Acer laptops running Vista. In neither case can I play either the audio on .TS files downloaded from a Humax PVR, or (suprisingly) standard mp3 files. I've searched the menus for options that might fix this, but no luck. The video on the .TS files plays fine. Can anyone help.

PS - if I convert the .TS file to .mpg using Video ReDo the file audio plays OK

what's the vlc version you are using? (you should say that in your post)
YOu might want to try out a NB from http://nightlies.videolan.org/
Do try the latest vlc-1.0.0-git then report back if it still doesn't work can you upload a sample file to the ftp://streams.videolan.org/incoming ?

Two versions: the current download 0.9.9 and also an older one 0.8.6i. Same problem with both. See also my edited note above re: .mpg files.
