Convert AVI to DVD

Hello,

I have an AVI file that only plays well on VLC player.
Other players and encoders inject skips and no sound when I burn the AVI to DVD.
Could you please tell me how to take this AVI and convert/reencode it to another format
or even another AVI so I can then burn it to DVD like normal?

Just to be clear...I want to use VLC to re-encode /process/ covert...whatever you call it , into a new file
that will not have all the skips etc...so I can take that new file and burn it to DVD.

Convert it to MPEG2 with MPEG Audio sound.
This will be the input to your video editing software.

Hi,

I am also trying to burn a dvd and cannot do it. My stupid Windows media player and dvd maker won't recognize an avi file that plays on vlc. Hmmm.. stinking microsoft. Anyway I followed the above link to wiki explaining how to convert the file to mpg. I converted it 6 times now and i don't get an mpg file. It also shows errors:

Streaming / Transcoding failed:
VLC could not open the encoder.

That is because VLC uses its own decoders. For WMP and DVD maker you have to install the needed codecs. Installing FFDshow should usually be enough.

I converted it 6 times now and i don't get an mpg file. It also shows errors

I need more messages. Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before doing conversion and when the error comes up, then paste the messages here.

Okay i did what you said in Tools -> Messages. Tried to convert it again and this is the error message:

Though i finally figured out how to burn it without converting the file. I opened Windows Movie Maker, imported the avi file, at this point "Publish to DVD"" is greyed out. I then edited titles and credits, added a title before the clip. Then it will let me publish to DVD. It prompts to save project and opens dvd maker (which would not import the avi originally) and then burns the dvd.

Oh boy... microsoft amazing that it works. Too bad it couldn't just do it the first time the first way.

how do you do that?

You add width and height to transcoding options, so width=720,height=576 if you do PAL or width=720,height=480 if you do NTSC.
For example
