windows vista VLC problems

Postby lisa1111 » 30 Jan 2009 22:48

Hi,,I've looked everywhere for help, now here I am. Please bare with me,,new to forums. Here is my problem. When I first started using VLC 0.8.6d I had no problems at first,,disc was read right away. Now I'm having problems playing my dvd-rw discs. All I want to do is play my dvd-rw discs. I taped from my t.v. (movies and shows)to my dvd recorder on dvd-rw discs. I finalize the discs then play them on my laptop. For some reason VLC doesn't want to anymore. Please help me with my setting,or what ever could be the problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. Sometimes I get message "vlc.exe stopped working".
Any help would be greatly appreciated
sincerely

hi random,,thanks for your reply,,as I noted in my question,i am using VLC 0.8.6d,, player. All other players I have (that came with Vista) will not run dvd-rw discs. Like I mentioned,VLC worked for a bit,,but now will not. What I think I need is the exact setting I should be using. I only play stuff I taped on my dvd recorder from my t.v. onto dvd-rw discs. I hope this is clear.

hmm, have you tried the release from http://www.videolan.org/ ?
I must say 0.8.6d is really out_of_date.
Why are you still using it ?
With vlc-1.0.0 is coming soon you should consider updating vlc.

I only started using VLC a few months ago,,I thought I was using the most up to date,,version.....when will the vlc-1.0.0 be coming out,,,,I was using an even older version,,and that only worked ok for awhile to,,so when I went to dowlnoad from a VLC sight,,I was given VLC 0.8.6d version,,,anyway,,is there another version I should try untill the new release?

I saw your other reply,,are you suggesting that I download media player classic? and if so,,do I remove VLC first?

Well try 0.9.8a first, if that still doesn't work give messages from log, Tools menu / messages then set verbosity to 2, try play the dvd-rw, what do you have in the dvd-rw just DVD video or AVI files ?

When you run the vlc-0.9.8a installer it will automatically ask you to uninstall old version first so do that just keep pressing next you should be fine.

lol... maybe some pros can help you.
Well did you try classic?
I don't know what you mean by dvd-rw, you've got to tell what's the video format / codec etc... you are trying to play, as well as pasting your error messages log.
Can you browse the dvd-rw and tell what is inside, folders and files?
Nightmare you mean? need more details to proceed.

They work independently, so no need to have both. But you can also have both if you want. It doesn't cause any issues.

what do you mean ON windows explorer,,when I put the disc in laptop,,sometimes it will open it,,sometimes it won't...then when I try to chage setting and pref. in VLC player, I end up messing up my laptop and having to restore it. The samsung dvd recorder that I use to tape stuff from my t.v. turns the dvd-rw dics to MPEG 4,,,, what setting do I need to save so the dics play every time I put them in my laptop E: drive... to play in VLC...

When you insert the disc and press Windows key + e, does the DVD drive show the disc label and can you browse the disc content?
