Original Size in Fullscreen mode

Postby Oskar » 24 Jun 2008 17:22

Would it be possible to include something similar to RealPlayer's ability to view a file in it's original size in the centre of the screen and the rest of the screen would show as black? It'd be particularly useful for small files that don't show up as well when you put it into VLC's actual full screen mode.

In addition it will be great to choose in fullscreen mode the resolution of your desktop (like in SubEdit Player). So the option for fullscreen mode could be like this:
1. don't change the resolution, resize movie to fullscreen
2. don't change the resolution, movie in original size (black borders)
3. change the resolution, resize movie to fullscreen
4. change the resolution, movie in original size (black borders)

The resolution could be chosen from the drop down menu.
And of course, after closing VLC, the resolution should be changed back to it's previous state.

IMHO media players should never change monitor resolutions. I just don't see any point in that.

Still possible, but this is not the same, this is cropping.

Oh, the Mac OSX VLC Player is still only in 0.9.9, so I guess this feature isn't available for the OSX player yet

Non-scaling fullscreen doesn't work, pressing 'o' or 'z' won't do anything :( (running Mac OS 10.6.2 and VLC 1.0.5 32-bit).
I find it quite curious that I can't find more threads about this as super-HD (>1920x1200/1080, >1080p) screens seem to be getting more popular.

The problem with a computer monitor that size, say 2560x1440 on 27 inches, is that the resulting PPI (Pixel Per Inch, the pixel density) will have you want to display 1080p video in it's actual size rather than scaling it up so it fits the screen. The perceived picture quality decreases as the PPI decrease and only increases as the viewer increases the distance to the screen (considerably), this however is not desirable in the case of a computer monitor.

So it would be awesome to have the option to display the actual size of the video centered in fullscreen mode.
With the surplus of pixels being all black and such :D

With QuickTime X you can do this so surely it must be possible with VLC because (whispering) QT is a little ignorant of certain codecs and containers :p

That's why I use VLC almost exclusively and have really grown to like my VLC play EVERYTHING the way I want it to, until recently, when I moved into a bigger screen (the view from here is amazing btw).

Please can you teach my screen some humility?
