VLC doesnt open directories.

I use ubuntu 8.10 and latest version of vlc player.

The problem is than vlc player can't open directories. When I try this vlc player reads the hard disk for a long time and it freezes.
If I open same files individually It does it OK.

I have tried removing vlc and /usr/share/vlc and reinstalling it but problem persists.

¿Have anyone an idea?

What the file sytem on this disk (ext3 ? ntfs? hfs+ ?)

Start vlc from a console with -vvv so that you'll have logs

main filesystem is reiserfs, /home directory filesystem is xfs. my /home directory is mounted in other partition.

vlc -vvv doesn't give any useful information.

Individual files are opened however directories not.

O.9.x does have issues opening directories from vlc, particulary a VIDEO_TS. (even if opening is successful, navigation is usually broken.

Try from the other direction, right click on a dir. -> 'open with.... or contine on to 'open with other application', ect.

In some cases it helps to delete your vlc config. files, typically home dir. -> .config -> vlc

I deleted my /home config files and the same.

It's pretty simple, opening directories from vlc in ubuntu ranges from works sometimes to in the case of a VIDEO_TS, totally broken.
That goes for all 0.9x versions 0.9.3 to 0.9.8a. In the case of a recent 1.0-git it won't crash but will switch to accessing a video_ts as a file which is somewhat worthless.
This includes versions built with and without the 'embedded' video.

Actually what appears to be the most foolproof means of accessing any dir. is to open vlc and drop the dir. onto it. (whether a video-ts or just audio or video files inside.
Note that if vlc crashes and you do a 'force quit' that the process will still probaly be running.
If vlc continues to crash with a 'drag and drop' then reboot, delete the vlc folder in ~/.config and restart vlc.

This is what it should be doing when accessing a video_ts dir. or a dir. with one inside.

Creating a playlist and adding archives to it works well. Vlc recognizes directories so.

I hope this bug will be fixed in the future.
