Double time duration for MP3 files

Postby booleanstyle » 01 Nov 2008 05:20

i have the latest version of videolan client (0.9.4). whenever i play an mp3 file with this version, the duration of the track is shown as doubled. for example, suppose a file is only 3:00. vlc will show around 6:00 in the bottom right hand corner of the window. the duration shows up correctly both in other players and in windows xp on the left side when the file is selected. my default player for mp3 files is vlc. does anybody know what's wrong or how to fix it? thanks!

edit: i edit to add that for another mp3 file, the displayed time in vlc was 1.5 times the actual time as opposed to 2x the actual time.

Hi,
I can confirm this behavior. Looks like it's with every file I tested.

VLC: 0.9.4
Windows: XP SP2
Language: Swiss-German DE-CH (Switzerland)

Sample: Duration should be only 02:38

This is fixed in 1.0.0 (VLC assumes/detects bitrate incorrectly in current builds).

MP3 files with a variable bitrate (e.g. certain more "complex" parts of a song take up more space per second than others):

VLC_help, just out of curiosity, how do you know it will be fixed in version 1.0.0? is it from looking at the source code that's under development? on an aside, the problem is still there as of 0.9.8a. (not that i have any doubt of what you said :P )
