Will RealPlayer be supported in future?

Are the developers working on support for RealPlayer codecs, or did they decide not to support it?
In the meantime, what alternative programs are there for RP files? Thanks.

VLC won't support any RealMedia files in the upcoming time, except you can convinse RealNetworks to publish their codec specifications. You can find more infos on this topic by browsing this forum.

Under Linux, MPlayer might be able to play RM-files, but I'm not sure about this. If it can, it is violating its own license btw.

It also claims VLC sends video to the planet mars.

The license of VLC doesn't allow using those libraries, because they are proprietary and not part of the OS.

The CODECs themselves are not open source, as is clearly indicated on the Helix page which talks about the Real CODECs.

zoom player can play real media files if you have real player installed. You also need some other file to get it to work, it willl say in the format compatability list. But atleast that way you don't actually have to USE real player. (god that thing sucks.) I imagine you could delete all the crap it installs minus what zoom needs and it would still work. I just wish people stopped using real media. OGM!
