Help, I've Broken VLC 0.9.3 and I Can't Fix It!

Postby PierreDeKat » 02 Oct 2008 10:21

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and I had been running VLC 0.9.3, installed via Synaptic Package Manager, and sourced from:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/ubuntu hardy main

Everything was working fine until I was monkeying around with the settings, and I somehow set things for "skins2", having used skins2 with 0.8.6 with no problems. I can't tell you the exact setting, because I can no longer launch VLC to change the setting back.

So I used Synaptic to do a "complete removal", reinstalled, ... nothing! VLC wouldn't launch.

Did another "complete removal", reverted my sources back to 0.8.6, reinstalled 0.8.6 ... nothing! VLC still won't launch.

So I've been searching my system for files with "vlc" in the name, hoping to find some sort of "Preferences" file that's to blame for my troubles, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for.

Is there a hidden "Preferences" file somewhere that needs to be deleted or modified before a fresh install?

Or is there some other file I should delete or modify or whatever?

Man, I sure hope somebody can help me, because I'm really freaking out here.

TIA

Did you tried deleting the .vlc directory from your home directory?
.vlc is a hidden directory and won't show on a default search.

Woohoo, SUCCESS!

Yeah, I had looked in my home folder for something like a .vlc file, but I just didn't dig deep enough. I found the culprits lurking inside my .config folder:

/home/user/.config/vlc/
/home/user/.config/vlc/vlc-qt-interface.conf
/home/user/.config/vlc/vlcrc

Deleted that hidden vlc folder and its contents, reinstalled VLC 0.9.3, and I'm back in the saddle again.

Thanks so much!
