What is your primary OS? Which version of VLC do you use?

thedj: I think there can be dark numbers there. Among others I think the number of linux users can be much larger than we think, since linux users tend to download for it's own distros mirrors (read debian). and linux users tend to read a bit more before asking questions. but yes, I agree on your general picture

If that list is true, I find it quite surprising that VLC is popular on XP since XP ships with an OK media player and there are a ton of other players for XP (Classic MP etc). Under Mac and Linux, VLC is probably the only option (mplayer is ok but has a worse UI).

We get huge download numbers on the windows build (that's where I based the list on).

Of course relatively spoken, VLC is definelty bigger on OSX.

The problem with all the players for Windows is that all of them use the same directshow filters to work.

i use vlc 0.80 test2 with win xp pro sp2.

this player plays them all - incredible! a really great program!
so easy to use (out-of-the-box), no problems at all (at least for me) and excellent picture & sound quality.

no other media player on windows (free) can stream something to other computer.

This is the only feature i use on vlc. and I did'n try the 0.8.0 offical version but i always have a freeze image after 1 hour or so. i have to reset all the thing to get it work again. but this is ther since 0.7.0 for me. And i'm probably the only one with this problem.. instead of that to software work very well

I'd like to add some weight to the priority of the OSX version, since VLC is the ONLY currently maintained mediaplayer of any standard. It's been ages since MplayerOSX was last updated, and I have yet to discover anything that isn't vastly inferior to VLC / Mplayer.

So, regardless of how big or small a chunk of the demographic we might be, you guys are our only hope.

Currently, Win XP and Yoper Linux (I had to build). Also, at the moment, I am trying to stream movies from the XP hard drive to the Linux box. This will be reversed as soon as I can get the bigger hard drive on the linux box.

I dunno about Mac, but Linux has many. Notably xine and mplayer (which you named), and others too, belonging to KDE or GNOME desktops. For ages I used these, unaware of VLC player. But now that I know of it and like it so much, I'm here to stay!
