If that list is true, I find it quite surprising that VLC is popular on XP since XP ships with an OK media player and there are a ton of other players for XP (Classic MP etc).
I dunno about Mac, but Linux has many. Notably xine and mplayer (which you named), and others too, belonging to KDE or GNOME desktops. For ages I used these, unaware of VLC player. But now that I know of it and like it so much, I'm here to stay!Under Mac and Linux, VLC is probably the only option (mplayer is ok but has a worse UI).
