(I found this thread with the search engine, while I already wrote my post, so it might seem like a new topic's post)
My point is about file associations, and how is customizible in VLC media player.
I realized that the only way for VLC media player to associate with file types is through the installation process, after that there is no way through the program to manage them. The only way is to manually go in Windows' Folder Options that is in Control Panel, and then in the section File Types.
This may require some knowledge about the process itself, and sometimes, some softwares (as Nero ShowTIme did for me), even after being uninstalled, still cause problems and mess us the associations system in the registry of Windows, and require a deep and precise registry clean to actually work (just delete everything related to that specific extension, then manually set it again).
The idea I had is from the good example of Winamp: a preference pane with selectable file associations to enable/disable associations with VLC, that can eventually apply changes instantly (or at the start of the program) for the file associations.
I think this would be a great idea and essential feature, especially for the Windows side. (I don't know about Linux or others, but on OSX is quite easy to change file associations, but still would be good to have a centralized preference pane).
thanks
