Need help playing video files?

Postby chupi99 » 06 Sep 2008 04:43

I downloaded the VLC player to watch a movie on my computer the other day, but I un-installed it today because I didn't want it anymore. Now, whatever videos I download won't work in Real Player or WMP, and when I try to open them in Windows Movie Maker, it says: " The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options dialog box."

I'm sorry if this isn't the right forum to ask in, but help me out, please?

Nothing to do with VLC. Are you sure you didn't also uninstall some codec pack that you had installed earlier?

There are a couple different things you could try:

1. Download/Re-download the latest WMP. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... nload.aspx
2. Re-download WMP codec, I believe the latest is for version 9. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
3. Make sure you have completely uninstalled VLC. (check C:\Program Files\VideoLAN --if that file is there delete it.)
4. Restart computer
5. Reinstall VLC
That should help.

If step 2 doesn't work then download the latest DivX codecs. http://www.divx.com/

There isn't any need to install latest WMP codec thingy if you have latest WMP already installed. And unless he/she is trying to open DivX videos, that DivX codec installation isn't going to help.

It's definitely worth a shot. If he is having problems with WMP then he should re-download WMP and the codecs.

You might be right about the DivX codec, but they do offer some other codecs besides just for DivX.

Edit: If you are having problems with WMP then you should head over to those forums.
