Ok, just got VLC as my first program on a new WinXP Pro system. Had previously used WinDVD but wanted to go Open Source (and free). However VLC seems to have trouble doing to most basic DVD tasks. While the video and audio are fine, I had the following problems on multiple DVDs:
1) It would freeze every hour or so needing task manager to kill it. I read that running 0.7.0-test 2 would fix this so I've upgraded to that. Haven't tested it but hope it works. Also noticed in 0.6 that the slider wouldn't be in an accurate place, i.e. you could slide it back and it would end up moving you FORWARD in the film...haven't seen if the 0.7 version fixes this.
2) Navigation is completely messed up. On some movies it starts playing the movie without going to the main menu (I'm running menu support) first then any attempt to use right click to go to the menu crashes VLC instantly. If instead I use the toolbar to go to the menu, it just starts the movie over. After that I started navigating around using different title and chapter numbers and found that they don't play the same thing each time. Sometimes I would stumble onto the menu at random times. For example, on the Six Feet Under DVDs Title 0 contains the menu on any standard DVD player and WinDVD but VLC was showing Title 1 as having the menu on some occassions and then on others Title 1 was the first episode. It just seemed totally random depending on where I was when I decided to switch chapters.
Could someone help me understand if this is a known problem? This definitely needs fixing if it is because this is basic DVD functionality and is forcing me to use WinDVD to enjoy my movie collection and I really would like VLC to win out.
Thanks
