Re: New version changed abilities

First: I have been running VLC for quite some time and am very happy with it. Many times when a video will not run in Media Player or other viewers, VLC will work. Not sure if this is a Vista problem or not. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 and just upgraded to SP1. I was running VLC 8.6c without problem. SP1 advises to upgrade all programs and drivers. I upgraded to VLC 8.6f. Previously I was able to play .flv files (flash video). Now I can't. I have tried changing settings, nothing works. What am I doing wrong?

Your .flv files don't play at all or they show black video or ...?

Nothing. When I hit play, I see the name of the file flash and that's it.

Edit: It was playing fine in 8.6c.

Hi,

I have an issue since I'm using Vista;

To get the best quality possible, I'm using the directx outpout in the preferences;

But in that mode (and only that one), each time I start VLC, my screen is like blinking, sometimes vlc gets to the background and so..

Looks like has something to do with the graphics adapter (nvidia), I've updated to the latest drivers (vista certified), and last version of VLC, and still getting the issue..

But it works, it's just anoying (and doesn't occurs using other modes)..

Any clue about how to avoid this?

Hi,
Thanks for the fantastic player!

Lately I have been facing some issues with VLC. It gives error "Unrecognized Format" for avi, mpg etc. Initially I thought the file was corrupted but it has been happening to all of them.

Also I had recvd a bin and cue files from a friend. When I play it merely moves the progress cursor and plays nothing as if the file is valid which is not the case.

I have been using VLC on vista since long time but these problems started croping up since I downloaded VLC 0.8.6.d

Thanks!

Has anyone been able to transcode anything on Vista with 0.8.6f? Every time I try I get the windows "vlc.exe has stopped running" error box.

I am trying to convert the sample video "bear.wmv" to Ogg/Theora/Vorbis format. I choose FILE output in the advanced stream/save settings, Ogg encapsulation, and the "theo" and "vorb" codecs. When I click OK there, then again in the Open dialog, a bunch of messages fly by in the message window, ending with "

Code: Select all

main debug: using crop padd module "ffmpeg"
". At that point it dies.

As a clue, the Visionair.tv Ogg Streamer fails with an access violation in NTDLL when I try to do the same thing with it.

Transcoding to MPEG with scale 0.5 works. Transcoding to MOV completes but QuickTime doesn't like the result - I may have chosen wrong codecs. (VLC can play it).

So the problem may be with OGG. Does VLC include its own copy of the OGG libraries?

No I am not still able to play the bin and cue files.
Also for some of the avi files it throws error saying unidentified format. THis avi were downloaded from torrents

I tried converting the same wmv file to OGG using VLC on Ubuntu Linux and it failed the same way; VLC just quit after creating an empty .ogg file. So this has nothing to do with Vista or Windows. I think it is a problem in the OGG encoders within VLC.

I have the same woes, but other programs using Vista Pro have similar problems (AutoCad, Revit...)
In the end my company (128 computers) "upgraded" to XP Pro, then all problems vanished completely.
The problem seems to be that the Gates mafia use the customer to test thier de facto beta products.
Another way of solving (some) AVI problems is to reprocess the suspect file with VirtualDub 1.78 (stable), then try again with VLC.
VirtualDub 1.80 is an experimental program which is very pedantic about fractional differences between what are supposed to be identical format files.

On Fridays I like to listen to movies so I rip my movies to audio for work. I have made the jump from XP SP2 to Vista Ultimate (32bit on a 64bit processor) and seem to have lost the ability to transcode DVDs to mp3. The settings I was using previously was RAW to mp3 at 96kbps in 2 channels. For some reason it either rips at 192kbps which ends up choppy or something that doesn't play at all.

I did notice that changing the bit rate dropdown does not change the transcode command line, so I manually changed that to 96 (which is when the files just plain don't work.

I've tried various encapsulation methods (TS, WAV) but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?
