browsing Samba shares in VLC ??

Postby Goner » 19 Mar 2008 10:00

Hi,

I've got a NAS in my network that supports SMB.
So I can browse in Konqueror to the share (smb://storage-42cd/) and then open folders, right-click files and open them with VLC.
In VLC I can enter the complete path (smb://storage-42cd/movies/movie.avi) to a file in the VLC 'open file' dialog, but the browse dialog there will not let me browse network shares ... is there a way to do this ?

using Mandriva 2008 & VLC 0.8.6d.
tia.

EDIT: just noticed there's a 'SMB input' in the 'access modules' under 'input/codecs' in settings ... so there has to be a way, I guess ?? I'm now using the 'File input', for which I upped the 'caching' to stream to a wireless laptop.

Yes, the SMB plugin can only read files, not directory. This is a limitation of the WxWidgets file open dialog.

You should mount the share using the CIFS kernel support instead.

Mounting is no problem (using Smb4K for that, using SMBFS not CIFS), but on a wireless connection, will the 'caching value in ms' in 'SMB input' do something when I open or mount an SMB share ? When I mount a shared video file from the NAS on a wireless laptop, the video stutters every couple of minutes ...
And I noticed that when I stream a (smb) file, upping the cache value (on the streaming PC) really helps against the stuttering, so now I'm streaming the file on the NAS from the (wired) server to the wireless client in stead of playing back the file it on the wireless client itself.

Its NOT working for me on Ubuntu 7.10 the Gutsy Gibbon.
I can get the share mounted to the desktop but I can not get to it with the VLC either by sending to the VLC or just loading the mounted samba share. It is not on the VLC file open list application but IS in the File List application of the Mount on the Desktop.
It seems to be mounted to the name smb://ShareComputer/ShareDirectory but I can not find the smb raw mount entry anywhere.
I will keep looking.
:shock:

Goner: use the file-caching setting instead.
