Re: QT4 Consolidation Thread (All QT4 Related) as requested

Postby Jean-Baptiste Kempf » 05 Dec 2007 13:10

This happens when reading both folders and/or DVDs. If I right-click on a folder or DVD and click "Add to VLC media player's Playlist" I immediately get the "Assertion failed" message and VLC crashes.

The only way for me to load items into the playlist is to first open the the folder that contains my music/videos and select whichever items I want and then drag and drop into VLC, this presents another slightly annoying thing because none of the titles to song/videos are displayed but instead the full path is displayed and I have to click on each item for it to display properly.
ok.

Quick question about the playlist: why is it that whenever the playlist is docked to the interface you can no longer resize it? Previous nightlies had it but this was from about a week or two ago. Anyway I just wanted to know if this is what it has been changed to or if it's only temporary.

Yeah, it started on the same nightly that you changed the volume graphic (ugly btw :P). Usually you'd click on the playlist button and it would appear detached from the interface until you click on the dock button, after that you could resize the interface and the docked playlist, now it resizes its height when you click on the dock button but won't let you resize its height (width resizing works fine). I like the November 25th nightly build because it would with the playlist already docked and revealed. :)

Thanks. :) I've tested the latest nightly and it more or less looks similar to the dimensions that I usually resize the interface to (exact dimensions of interface without window decoration: 462x402) .

I've done a little work on the graphic to the volume slider to make it blend more with the interface, I've modified the "New VLC Default Icon" some more so that it's not too "overloaded", I've changed the look of the 'Queue Items to be saved to a playlist' (Add to Playlist) to look a little better as well, and some other stuff. :P Well I figured that I might as well post it. Hopefully you might consider some of these changes for the QT4 interface.

Image

If you want I have all of the individual png format images saved (with transparency) and can send them to you, If you want. 8) It's too bad that I don't know how to develop for QT4 yet. :(

Maybe I used too many "Smooth" effects in an attempt to make it blend. Btw do you ever like anything?

It's like half the interface man! :P Well it's a little big to be honest. Is mine really all that blurry? :) Well it doesn't matter since I'm changing it anyway. I'll upload another new pic of the interface with the less blurred volume slider, I also adjusted the interface a little more so that everything will look even.

Ok. I'll wait for altglass :D

I can't do the blurry thing easily on Qt.

Btw, I still don't remember what are the features I still need to do.

It's not completely necessary to do the blur effect but it might work out well if you add a drop shadow behind the volume slider that take on the color that's closest to red, this will at least make it look smoother without having to squint. :)

What, from this thread or in general?

There are some things still missing from the current interface, I don't know if you plan to add them later or at all. :P I wouldn't mind having the "Add to Playlist Queue" buttons, it would be really good for creating playlists and virtual playlists. Oh btw CloudStalker updated the main page to this thread because it was in total disorder (much like CloudStalker :P ).

I do like many things, but badly designed things I don't like. Blurring an image is not quite what I understand under making it blend into the interface. You have not yet so much experience, so I don't want to reproach you here :) But imagine your slider in the interface, you cannot blur the right end of the slider when its not full technically so it would look ugly on the right edge.
Compare:
Image

Also the things you put into the interface have no consistent design, stars are pixelart, rest is images, some are taken from windows media player etc.
You have to take into account that VLC runs on many Systems with totally different visual styles. So VLC has to integrate itself best into all of them. It takes quite some work to figure out a compromise that pleases everybody.

Just some points you might think about

Let's not go too far with this, they're just mock-ups you know. :P If I were actually developing part of the interface then I'd do a better job, but since I'm not and none of this is actually being committed to the official interface then this a moot point, I'm only changing the blur effect to the volume slider since some of you claim getting headaches and nosebleeds from trying to look at something so blurry. :P

[wondering if more should be said] :?

OK well I fixed the volume slider (no blur effect! :P) and hopefully it looks good enough to add to the official interface, I also evened some things out so that it looks neater overall.

Better? :) Btw I added the blur effect the last time because I couldn't blend the image behind it but now I got it to work.

I'll just throw another Idea your way for columns and the way in which some things can be displayed in the playlist.

[30] Column Layout + Playlist Display

Since I'm trying to display the most useful data in the least amount of space on the interface I think that adding an extra slot to the columns for the Album Title/Artist might do the trick. In my more recent screenshots only Title, Rating and Duration are displayed, so maybe something like this will work(?):

Image

As for the playlist
sometimes it can be a
little tough to find
certain albums and their
number of discs, so
perhaps displaying that
in the playlist will make
it easier to find.

Image

This is of course tentative but maybe you might find it to be useful after all. There's one more thing that has been puzzling CloudStalker... :?
