have audio but no video?

Postby grubbydog » 05 Dec 2007 18:26

I am very new to using VLC and I suspect I have not got a correct setting. I have a 3 part mpg file that I am trying to download and view. Part 1 ( about 100mb) is fine. It opens and I can view and hear it. Part 2 and 3 (also about 100mbs) download and when they open I have audio but no video. Please help a newbie and tell me what is going on? How do I fix this? BTW I get no error messages...just audio but no video. I'm running XP SP2. Thanks.

During playback press Ctrl+i and check advanced information tab and check if the VLC detect video codec correctly (same on working and on non-working files).

VLC_Help- Thanks for the tip. Both of the codecs are the same...mpgv and mpga for the video and audio. I checked the working version and the non working. Everthything appears to be identical. The statistics box shows the audio "decoded blocks" moving along with the audio but the video decode blocks is at ZERO. On the working mpg there is a steady progression of decoded blocks as you view it.
I had the same issue when I tried Real Player or Windows Media Player. First one works, the next one is only audio??
Since I'm new to this program I figured I have got a setting wrong. This is just a foreign tv program and I know they are not blocking it. Any other ideas?

You can try to remux the mpg file and see if it helps. You can use TMPGenc and its File -> MPEG tools... and first de-multiplex and after it multiplex.

:D Hey grubbydog , I had the same problem AUDIO BUT NO VIDEO, and I just upgraded yesterday with a new reformat of my Hard Drive. Never had a prob before. I searched here after trying all kinds of other places and the guy had 2 suggestions.
1st solution: change Video Output to Direct X, open VLC-goto-settings-preferences-video-output modules, then click advanced options at the bottom and when that opens select Direct X Video Output. Then press save at the bottom and retry your video.
2nd solution: Uncheck Overlay Video Output, open VLC(or if your still there) goto-settings-preferences-video-then uncheck the box in front of Overlay Video Output. press save and retry your video.

I did both at the same time so I can't say which worked but it was easy and fast and NOW my video's play great again.

Just sharing the good info, ya'll have a great holiday season
