Audio plays, no video, .wmv file with MSS2 video codec

Postby lope483 » 05 Aug 2007 12:27

first, hello. im new to the boards but have used VLC since like jan.06 and have NEVER had a problem with it until now. it is by far the best program for playing media files :)

ok, now to my problem. i have some poker training videos and when i open them, the audio plays but the sound doesnt. the video cdec is MSS2. here is the file info:

Stream 0:
Codec: wma2
Type: audio
Sample rate: 44000 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
Bitrate: 32 kb/s
Codec Name: Windows Media Audio 9.1
Codec Description: 32kbps, 44kHz, momo (A/V), 1-pass CBR

Stream 2:
Codec: MSS2
Type: Video
Resolution: 640x480
Codec Name: Windows Media Video 9 Screen

everything ive read about wmvs and mising audio or video says to use the "--codec dmo" switch in the command line, but im a novice. dont know how to run it that way. also, on the Wiki page, it says MSS2 is supported, but "dmo only" and to activate in in "Preferences"< but ive looked EVERYWHERE and cant find a setting for "dmo". can someone please help? i really dont like running this file in WMP cause it is slow and crashes sometimes. thanks for help.

Can't find the option in the preferences of 0.8.6 either, in 0.9.0 nightly builds its under "Input and Codecs">"Use system codecs if available"

Otherwise just rightclick the shortcut from which you launch vlc, choose preferences and add "--codec dmo" at the end of the target text input field, leave a space between the path to vlc.exe and the codec-switch.
-- 3breadt (aka altglass)

tried this and when i go to click Apply or OK a Windows Warning box comes up and says "The name speciafied in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path and filename are correct."

this is what my Target box looks like in my shortcut for VLC:

"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe --codec dmo" (the quotation marks are there)

any ideas? thanks for the quick responses.

This should work:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --codec dmo
-- 3breadt (aka altglass)

This should work:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --codec dmo
thanks. the properties box accepted that command line, but VLC still isnt playing video.

the message box says this:
dmo error: can't set DMO output type
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `MSS2'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

blah, this sucks. anyone else have any ideas? im guessing the file just wont play, no matter what i do.

Try it with a nightly build of v.0.9 (http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/?C=M;O=D)

I have the same problem, downloaded and installed the vlc-0.9.0-svn-20071217-1014-win32.exe version and then I get the following message:

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "MSS2". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this. :(

Does anyone know if this is this going to be solved in a near future?

Ok, for those of you who are using windows 7 64-bit, I was reading through this thread and found that there's a simple answer elsewhere...

Windows 64-bit by default sets the media player to 32-bit to curb codec problems, all you need to do is switch it to 64 bit and it'll play those files noooo problem.

soo.... here's where I found help...http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/10/2 ... lt-player/

Simply download this file http://depositfiles.com/files/s8bfwxl6u, run the batch file for your bit system, and you'll be able to play those files

Cheers,

Taylor

tdhess15: I doubt the fix works with VLC.
