ZMBV support

Postby PictureThis » 06 Mar 2007 16:24

Hi all,

Today I rediscovered DOSBox, a real gem if you're looking for a way to play all those vintage DOS-games. One excellent feature is the ability to video capture your gameplay. Unfortunately it's in zmbv-format which is currently not supported by VLC. I tried both the Windows and OSX platforms but all I get is sound.

From the messages window:
Windows: "no suitable decoder module for fourcc `ZMBV'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
And on OSX the same story:
main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `ZMBV'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
From the DOSBox README.video:
To play the recorded movie, you need a movie player which can handle the ZMBV codec. MS Windows users can find this codec in the start menu entry of DOSBox. Users of Linux and other OSes should look for a movie player that uses the ffmpeg libary (you may need to update or ask your distribution to upgrade).
Currently I use Media Player Classic on Windows and MPlayer on OSX as a temporary solution but I would like to switch to VLC if only you guys make it possible :)

Man ....
Hee Hee

This is what I so love about the InterNet -- it offers stuff that I really belived I was the only one to think of ! lol

I found this teriffic website that goes right in line with what "PictureThis" mentions -- "Golden Age" DOS games.
It's here if you're curious > "Golden Age Flight Simulators"
Just click a game & the video's there ta be downloaded.

And I have the exact same question -- has "ZMBV" ability been added to the "VLC Player" yet ?

Thanks In Advance!

Big grin..

Seriously though... VLC v0.8.6b still gives me that same error message when playing a ZMVB-file. The message log shows:
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `ZMBV'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
Any suggestions j-b?

yes, as I have already told you, use 0.9.0-development to have ZMBV support that I included two or three weeks ago.

:?: Where/when did you point to the 0.9.0-development branch? Ah well, I gave v0.9.0 a whirl and ZMVB support has arrived indeed, thanks! :)

What exactly is the ZMBV (Zero Motion Block Video) codec? I know dosbox uses it for screen recording, but why not one of the more common codecs in existence? What (technically speaking) does ZMBV do that makes it so good for recording dos game footage?
