Why can't all ports install as eazy as slackware?? Help Plz

Postby rleeson » 23 Feb 2007 01:19

Hi all...

I'm sorry to bother you with this but I'm in panic mode I need to port a VLC app to a box (I don't have a choice on the box, I stuck with it) that hates slackware... which for me at least is always so friendly to VLC... I've tried seveeral other distro (so far SeSU seems as stable as any)

My problem is getting VLC to install... It keep failing for lack of some lib or app or another or because I try to lload them in the wrong sequence...

Could someone point me inthe right direction to find a concise discription or process to besure all the require parts are present... and what they are...

Thanks very much....

Rob

In theory yes it's easy but in practice it is something else...

I finally got it down to one dependency libslang-utf8.so.1 the complete message reads...

There are no installable providers of libslang-utf8.so.1 for vlc-0.8.6a-1.1.i586[20070223-133948]

I did a search trying to find a source and found a lot of messages from people looking for the little beasty... any thoughts where it may be hiding

Install VLC 0.8.6a and later on SLED 10

Postby dimstar » 24 Feb 2007 07:08

rleeson,

slang-utf8.so.1 is not a valid dependency of VLC for SLED10. Slang 1 was used in older versions of SuSE only.

SLED10 is SUSE Linux 10.1 compatible, NOT 10.0!

I just tried installing VLC 0.8.6a on a SLED10. There are very few packages that are not shipped with SLED which are still required (and not provided in the VLC Repo).

So, to install VLC on a SLED 10, do the following:
Grab the needed, non SLED RPMs from a 10.1 Mirror (http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/). You will need to get the RPMs for:
wxGTK
libmspack (is required by wxGTK)

Then add the VLC repository of SUSE Linux 10.1 to your Yast Installation Sources (URL: http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/10.1)

Install VLC using YaST.

Doing so should bring all the other dependencies is, either from the VLC repo (if VLC specific) or from the SLED10 Disk.

Regards,
Dominique
