VLC ON SAMSUNG 3D TV's! - VLC, DVD, PS3, bridge the gap!!!

Postby nysbigdave » 27 Nov 2010 03:19

Any one else out their looking for a VLC app for your Samsung TV

I got my Samgung 3D LED tv about 5 Months ago. Samsung has an integrated app store for the Set. Apps such as Netflix, Blockbuster, weather, all types of widgets basically.
Even a media player that will scout your network for media..

The Problem however is the random formats of video that we all have.. The Integrated codec is ... (lacking). Ive found it necessary to install tversity media server.
been looking forward to posting this for the last 3 months...
In short this is a beg for feature, i come from a development background and would be willing to contribute what i can.

Found a similar post via google...

VLC, DVD, PS3 and Samsung TV...bridge the gap

Ok, I'm looking for a solution where VLC has worked great on my PC being able to play every type of video file I've thrown at it.

Usually, I use DVDFab to copy DVD's to a portable USB HDD. It will copy the DVD uncompressed into the typical "Audio_TS" and "Video_TS" DVD folder structure. VLC is one of the few media players that will actually let me playback these files on my HDDs using the "Open Folder" feature. The thing is, I don't watch movies on my PC. So what I usually do is later copy these movies to a DVD-RW and use my DVD player to play them back. So, I was thinking..."Wouldn't it be wonderful if I didn't have to copy to a DVD and just playback directly from the portable HDD on which they reside?"

So I got a new Samsung LED HDTV which has USB ports and has app support and a built in Media Player. My problem is that this built in Media Player doesn't playback the DVD folders like VLC can do. So I thought....wouldn't it be great if there was a VLC app that could be installed on the Samsung TV?? Damn...doesn't exist. So then I thought....I have a PS3, which is connected to the Samsung TV via HDMI, wouldn't it be great if I could install VLC on to the PS3?? So after doing a lot of reading and finding I have to install an OS on my PS3 and my PS3 has been updated to the latest firmware....this seems like a complicated task and most likely not possible, but it sure would be awesome if I could just install VLC on to the PS3, plug in the USB HDD and starting playing the files.

So then I did some more reading where I found I could stream media from my PC to the PS3, since my PS3 is connected to my home network along with my PC. I'm just wondering if I can use VLC on my PC to do this since VLC is capable of playing back the media files, and wondering if I would lose a lot of video quality since I'ld be streaming wirelessly?

So what is my best solution? I have a Samsung TV with app support, a PS3, a PC with VLC on it and they're all connected to my home network and have access to the internet. The end goal is to be able to watch my copied DVD files on my USB HDD on the Samsung TV without losing any video/audio quality. I don't want to convert these files to divx...etc, because frankly that takes much longer than if I just burned it to a DVD-R and I'm trying to maintain the original quality of the video so that it looks/sound best on my home entertainment system.

I would love a VLC Media player that could be installed on my Samsung TV or PS3.

You would most likely have to hire somebody to do the work. And there could be some kinds of license issues in case you want to use official distribution channels.

yes please I really want this functionality too!

I'm a video editor with a large archive of dvd's that I use for reference (not copyrighted material, just mainly internal stuff from clients) and a lot of them have some kind of menu functionality that I want to retain. I'm trying to move away from having to keep the physical disks handy, or to have to use a computer running VLC to access them on my network.

It would be super handy to have a VLC 'app' that could run on my xbox and/or PS3 (and to address the original post, on my app enabled TV when I eventually own one, and let's face it, perhaps an app on a tablet device like the iPad or an Android tablet) so I can just access my dvd reference archive over my network.

Could the moderators of this forum (and this is my first ever post so forgive my noob-ness) please break down the feasibility of delivering VLC to these various platforms? (PS3, XBOX360, App Enabled TV, iPhone, iPad, Android Phone, Android Pad).

Also FYI, if it helps move the process along, I'm willing to put in the legwork to research this and build connections between the people who can write the code and the people who own the platforms, it seems similar to project management and production.

iOS and Android already have VLC ports.

PS3 and Xbox 360 versions could be done, but they would require some money since AFAIK dev kits aren't free and they would have to be commercial apps in PSN and Xbox Live (so one would need approval from Sony and Microsoft). Also as I said earlier, someone would have to negotiate licenses from MPEG LA and other companies, so this isn't easy.

I have the same question!
I have a Samsung smart TV and/or an Xbox360 that I would like to put VLC on.
My endgame is to watch my DVD collection that has been ripped to .ISO files.

VLC is available on Xbox One, AFAIK. Porting to Xbox 360 is unlikely at this point; or I should say, you can only count on yourself to do it.
