Current Windows 8.1 Version?

Postby Dave-H » 27 Sep 2016 17:07

I have the VLC app version 1.7.0.0 installed on Windows 8.1 64 bit.
It works very well when it works, but some videos files I have will not play properly, sometimes just playing the sound with a frame of the previous video played stuck on the screen, and eventually the whole app just crashes and has to be re-started.
It doesn't seem to have updated itself recently either. When I checked there seemed to be a version 2 available, but it seems to be for Windows 10 only. :(
So, what is the latest version for Windows 8.1? I can't believe its the one I've got as I've had it for months!
Any ideas why it's so unstable?
Thanks, Dave.

+1

I am also want to know the status of win 8.1 version update...
They stated that they "will" release a version with back compatibility in "few weeks"... And at the moment, still stuck with VLC v1.7 here...

So far, 2.5.3 is only for Windows 10. We're trying to backport to 8.1

You presumably thought this thread was about what versions were available of Windows 8.1!
No, it's about the versions of the VLC app that are available for Windows 8.1, and why they have fallen so far behind the Windows 10 versions.
:)
The post that my previous post was referring to seems to have been deleted BTW, making my post irrelevant. Please remove it.

The reason why they have fallen so far behind, is because it's very difficult to maintain, since most of the 8.1 SDK do not work anymore on recent VS versions and because it's very hard to develop for, because so much is missing.

So either you wait for our backport, or you use the outdated version, or you use the desktop app.

Is there any way to use the out-dated app?

I was using the out-dated app. It worked perfectly. Then I inadvertently updated through the windows store via the w8.1os, and now 3.1.1.0 works terrible.

Can only find the 3.1 Win8.1 app on FTP, the previous builds of this app were not uploaded it seems.

Do you have a link to that FTP page.

And another gripe. The player plays in only one landscape mode, so when my tablet is in a different configuration due to power outlet issues, it will play the video in the default position and therefore flip the video upside down.

I'd be perfectly fine with a 1.0 or 2.0 ver of the Windows store app for 8.1

Don't think that it is possible, as you cant downgrade app version with the Microsoft Store.

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... nrt/1.7.0/ You need to install the appx yourself.

Uninstall previous version first.
Extract the appx and then in powershell (as admin):

Code: Select all

Add-AppxPackage -Path C:\Path\To\VLC_WinRT.Windows_1.7.0.0_x86_arm_bundle\VLC_WinRT.Windows_1.7.0.0_x86_arm\VLC_WinRT.Windows_1.7.0.0_x86\AppxManifest.xml -Register

Is there a specific folder that the package has to be in and does that code have to have any modifiers depending on the directory the package is in?

You need to replace
C:\Path\To
by the actual path on your system

Without bothering you further, where can I find a program or tutorial so that I can extract the appx file?

I am not a software developer.

This will do https://www.7-zip.org/

The appx you want is here

Code: Select all

VLC_WinRT.Windows_1.7.0.0_x86_arm_bundle.appxupload\VLC_WinRT.Windows_1.7.0.0_x86_arm.appxbundle\VLC_WinRT.Windows_1.7.0.0_x86.appx

I used 7zip to extract what I think is every appx file, leaving the original appx file in place, and verified that the path you suggested was observed, and I got this. It seemed to do something different, then displayed this
