Making vlc player the default

Postby ariyae » 02 May 2005 17:08

I've posted about this before but I didn't get any good answers. Please tell me how to make vlc the default player for all the music and movies it can play.

Both on Windows and on Mac OS X that's a default feature of your OS. Please search the forum and I bet you'll find your answer really soon as this topic has been discussed at least a million times. Additionally, if you are using Windows, you may enable that while running the installer.

I did search but I didn't find anything helpful. Since you seem to know a lot, could you please just answer my question or search for a thread like this with helpful answers.

thanks

Which OS do you use? This feature is implemented differently on Windows and on Mac OS X (and I'm a bit out of time at the moment, so I cannot look for both threads - I would do that usually, but just to busy right now).

kurly

I'm with Ariaye on this...

I have also done a search and haven't found anything particularly helpful. People ask this question over and over and it doesn't really get answered, especially for Mac OS X. It would be great if you could answer this question clearly once and for all and put it up as a sticky note.

I am using Mac OS X. I saw where I am supposed to go into the Finder, click on the file I want to open with VLC, then click File, Open With, then select VLC. Where I'm lost is, where is this "Change All" button that's been mentioned? All I'm seeing is an option to "Always Open With." But that's for the individual file, not all files of that type.

So, what I'm getting from all of this is there's no way to assign specific types of files for which VLC is always the default player. Correct?

Windows soloution only:

Theres a few ways to acheive this on windows.
Im running windows 2k and its been my default player for ages.

The first way is to right click whatever.avi and select properties.

In the general tab you'll see

Code: Select all

Filetype: AVI Opens with: whateverplayer [CHANGE]
Click the change button and scroll down till you see VLC.
If its not there click OTHER and surf till you find where youve installed vlc.exe.

Tick the "always opens with this program" box and BAM thats 1 filetype done, repeat with .ogm, .mkv, .mpg etc till youve got it all done.

The other way (and a little less effort involved) is to modify file mimetypes.

To do tis double click my computer (or right click start and select explore) just so long as you get a file browser up your fine.

Click on TOOLS (or press alt+t) and click on "FOLDER OPTIONS" now click the "FILE TYPES" tab and let it perform its scan.

Surf down the list selecting known video and/or audio filetypes then clicking the CHANGE button in the "opens with:" dialogue simmilarly with above just tick the "always opens with this program" box and select VLC.exe.

Im not a mac user so i dont know the first thing about how to do the same in OS X.

And if you where a linux user then you should already fully understand how to modify mimetypes.
