Theres a few ways to acheive this on windows.
Im running windows 2k and its been my default player for ages.
The first way is to right click whatever.avi and select properties.
In the general tab you'll see
Code: Select all
Filetype: AVI
Opens with: whateverplayer [CHANGE]
Click the change button and scroll down till you see VLC.
If its not there click OTHER and surf till you find where youve installed vlc.exe.
Tick the "always opens with this program" box and BAM thats 1 filetype done, repeat with .ogm, .mkv, .mpg etc till youve got it all done.
The other way (and a little less effort involved) is to modify file mimetypes.
To do tis double click my computer (or right click start and select explore) just so long as you get a file browser up your fine.
Click on
TOOLS (or press alt+t) and click on
"FOLDER OPTIONS" now click the
"FILE TYPES" tab and let it perform its scan.
Surf down the list selecting known video and/or audio filetypes then clicking the
CHANGE button in the "opens with:" dialogue simmilarly with above just tick the "always opens with this program" box and select VLC.exe.
Im not a mac user so i dont know the first thing about how to do the same in OS X.
And if you where a linux user then you should already fully understand how to modify mimetypes.
